Q9550@4ghz bottleneck gtx580??

Thread Starter
When I play bc2, my fps will drop to ~35fps during some massive explosion while i'm zooming into it... does this sound normal to a gtx580? or it's my cpu bottlenecking the card? any help will be appreciated.. thanks

EDIT: Everything is set to max in 1080 resolution.. AA, HBOA ect...

Question.. How much difference in graphic am I looking at if i turn off AA and HBOA... Sry im at work, so couldnt test it out...

Q9550 at 4Ghz won't bottleneck a 580.

Try turning off AA and Ambient Occlusion (HBAO I think is the setting) and trying the same part. Does the lag go away?

I trust you can figure out what the result of this experiment would mean

Anytime you make a statement of this nature, no matter what the hardware is ... no offense, man, but ... you are wrong.

according to a article in custom pc, hbao might net you around +10fps when disabled.

The purpose of the test I described is that you are lowering the image quality settings w/o lowering the CPU load. If the lag in the particular part of the game in question goes away when you reduce settings that should only impact GPU load, it *strongly suggests* (note that I'm NOT saying it *proves*) that the issue causing the lag is not the CPU, but rather the IQ settings being used.

And it's quite simply never correct to categorically state that some CPU "won't" bottleneck some GPU, because this inherently/by definition dictates that it will NEVER happen. In reality, it depends on the test (what game/bench etc) you run, and what settings you that test at (i.e. what IQ settings).

If you wish to answer such a question as "will X cpu bottleneck Y gpu" correctly, you will use terms like 'it will rarely bottleneck', or 'it's unlikely to cause significant bottlenecks' ... statements that describe frequency and/or severity. A categorically binary 'true/false' answer ... is most definitely wrong.

true.. +rep
I'll do that test once i get home today and see if the lag will go away..

Does not seem right that your fps is dropping to me OP. I run everything max, hbao on, 80+ 24/7 in BFBC2 with my setup which is not as good as yours. I would make sure no background programs are running and defrag and run disk checks on your disks.

In the nvidia control panel make sure the global settings are right with prefer max perf on.

i was in the same boat, It will not bottleneck a single GTX 580 but i was force to upgrade my Q9550 @ 4ghz when i went SLI and saw that anyone with a I5 or i7 (i920/950/850/760 etc)stock speed were getting MUCH better score and higher FPS with SLI GTX 570. I tried everything and posted a few question about it. After upgrading to a 2600k (2500k would be the same) it was like i actually did a videocard upgrade. i went in metro2033 benchamark SLI from 47fps to 84fps same drivers. 3dmark from 33k to 54k, heaven from 103fps-126fps. In games the minimum FPS is much higher cause in places i was getting big slowdown, is butters smooth at a cap 60fps. Also i kind of hate the lga775 mobo because DDR2 are way to expensive now and days.

So if you are planning on going SLi you might aswell upgrade. If not, keep your setup.

Edit: i just read your problem with BC2, and i can tell you that in SLI gtx 580 i was still having slowdown in BC. I even posted this here but all those slowdown went away when i upgraded to a 2600k. Now everything is cap at 60fps with vsync on and HBAO on with 16X AA. Before i was force to run the game without AA to get a smooth FPS and this is with GTX 580 SLI.
