Western Digital Raid!

post #1 of 20

I was wondering how 2x 500GB WD Caviar Blacks in Raid 0 would scale, for both performance and speed.

if you have luck you can raid them.
but if you go WD buy their RAID specialized harddrives.

Sometimes the Black well mostly the Black fail to RAID, becuase they have the alternate versions of them.
and those are WD Black Raid version HDD.

Performance = Speed.

Near linear in sequential read/write.
Random read/write will remain basically unchanged.
Once again...

The RE drives are specifically made for RAID arrays. Some of the non RE drives lack Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) and can hang, causing the drive to drop from the array.

I run 3 non RE WD drives in RAID0 now for about a year with no issues.

I don't really know the rate of failure for non TLER drives in RAID, but I would opt for the RE drives if you have sensitive data. My RAID data is all expendable.

You will need to enable TLER to get proper RAID performance out of most consumer-grade WD drives. Read more here: http://www.overclock.net/raid-contro...sue-fixed.html

FYI here is two WD 500GB AAKS drives (Caviar Blue series) in RAID0 on ICH10R with 64kb stripe:

Two Blacks in RAID0 should be marginally faster than the array shown above.
