Opinion on build

Thread Starter
I may be building a secondary rig to take to dorm with me at LSU next semester. I don't want to risk my >$1000 main rig (Athena) at a dorm, but I'd like to have something gaming capable at least.

Here's the build I was thinking of:

AMD Phenom II X2 555
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103846

Biostar A780L3L 760G
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138290

Kingston ValueRAM 2GB DDR3 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134812

Gigabyte Radeon HD5670 1GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125360

Hitachi 500GB HDD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145299

Plus an old Antec case I have laying around, one of my review sample PSUs, and an Arctic Freezer Pro 64 I have.

The key idea here is cheap. I may do slight overclocking, but the main idea is to just have something cheap that won't be a huge loss if it's damaged or stolen, but can still play games at decent settings on a 1440x900 monitor.

Opinions or ideas?

KVR is good, however try to get 5770 for decent performance.
And I agree with ^ about the Athlon

Perhaps spend another 20 and toss another stick of Kingston in there.

lol twice the RAM non-generic 1600Mhz CL9 decent overclockability SAME PRICE
lol @ you guys and ripoff generic memory choices
No matter what you choose by the way get 2 DIMMs, immense benefit with dual channel over single channel. Worth it... oh wait 2 DIMMs of decent RAM is the same price

The motherboard being 2+1 phase will hold an x2 but I don't think any overclocking or unlocking would be close to safe. Don't even try touching ACC...
If you can manage an ATX case [Coolermaster Elite 360 for example... full ATX and SFF, and I love SFF] get M4A79XTD EVO + GT 430, 79XTD EVO should be in stock again soon. It'll unlock your x2 safely and nicely and overclock pretty well too.

For about $10 more, you can have a full ATX mobo, a DDR5 version of the 5670 (instead of the DDR3 version), a Rana X3 instead of a Regor X2, 4GB RAM instead of 2GB, a more reliable HD, and something about a pear tree...

If you are willing to spend the higher out of pocket initial cost for that HyperX stuff that XD linked to and do the MIR, that would be even better!

Thanks, that looks like a good build.

One thing, the 24-pin ATX connector on that motherboard is in a stupid, stupid location. That's going to be a major PITA to cable route for.

And no I'm not getting a 5770. Any graphics card over $100 would be stupid for this purpose. A 5670 would be just fine for running most games at medium to high on a 1440x900.

Yeah thats pretty good, Just don't expect high FPS on crisis or something LOL.

Thanks, but the GT430 is not an adequate gaming card, it's about half the performance of the HD5670. The GT430 is about on par with the GT220 or 9500GT. I used a 9500GT. Not great for modern gaming.

And I definitely don't need a high end motherboard, when I say slight overclock I mean like 10-20% tops.
