Why cant I find this out anywhere?

I have a legit copy of Windows XP retail that I bought years ago but have not used it in a while because the cd broke. Plus Vista and Win 7 came out and all. I still have the packaging with the cd key and all but cant use it cuz of the broken CD of course. I want to know if there is a way to download a copy and use my CD key so I can install it? I have no idea where to find this out and where to download off Microsoft's website.

Is it an OEM copy, or volume license key? If it's volume license, no biggie. OEM is locked to the machine it came with. Buying it outright was usually a given to be linked to a single computer. You may be able to try it on another computer, but might run into update issues. I'm not 100% on that, however, as I've used a VLK for XP since shortly after it was released. For installation purposes, yes, the key will most definitely work. After that, however, is where I forget. Download a copy and see. As an aside, this is specifically why I make backups of my discs; they're going to eventually break or deteriorate.

Its a retail copy. The only issue is my CD is broken. Either I need a new CD, or if I can download it that would be better.

I dont think I realized at the time that I could make a backup of a Windows cd.

The easiest place to get a copy is to download a full disc ISO from somewhere that hosts it. Filesharing sites/torrents...

If you're using a legitimate CD key to download then morally I don't see what's wrong with it, just make sure you download a clean, untouched original ISO file of the disc image, then you can just burn it and install as if it was your original CD

For sure. I've seen lots of unaltered versions of XP, Vista and Win 7 on the Pirate Bay. Nothing wrong with that move. Just make sure you got a good AV and don't grab a cracked OS.

You will need to determine what version and SP the key is for. XP keys were for specific version and SPs....
