your mobo has eight sata ports and your raptors only use two of then so you should be able to just buy the hard drives and plug them in. Also for storage go with the greens, slower but two for the price of a black.

Four of the sata ports are fail. Also, everything I've read has said that RAID5 will slow system way, way down which is why I would need controller with chip and ram. Unless, I'm doing everything wrong.

Well aware of that, but have to wait on Asus/Intel. Even if I didn't have to wait on them everything I have read has said that anything except raid 0 and 1 is a mess with onboard controller.

@OP

The card is a good card and is solid in RAID 5, as opposed to the on-board controller implementation. However, I'd be a bit leery about the drives. 182515 makes a good call on using low power drives for storage, but those Caviar Greens don't seem to play well on hardware RAID controllers due to not supporting TLER.

Personally, I'd look at the Hitachi 5K3000 or the Samsung F4EG. The Samsungs are great value (I own three in RAID 5), but you'll need to update the firmware on them before you put them into play. Look here for more information.

Before you splash the cash, take a look at the Areca Owners Thread. It's a long thread now, but definitely worth a read.

As far a tler goes I was under the impression that you could set that to whatever you needed to be under the RAID cards max wait time was. 10-15 seconds or something. Is this incorrect?

I'm not sure about that specifically. I do know that TLER has to be set in the drive's firmware - and that Caviar Green drives will not accept it. Perhaps the RAID card can set it via a SMART command, but it's definitely something that has to be set on the drive.
