The reason I said that the 8800gts is similar to the 9600gt is so that he can compare them, because you rarely find benchmarks 2 series apart. so treat the 9600gt as the 8800gts 320mb.

This. I've done some very recent benches in Heaven comparing 8800GTS 640MB vs 8800GTS SSC (rare 112 sp 640MB), vs 9800GTX vs HD 4850 all stock and all with an OC. Here are my results for what its worth:

http://www.overclock.net/12399400-post67.html

With an OC the 8800GTS 640MB performs close to 9800GTX on avg FPS and actually outperforms in min FPS.

As I said earlier, 240 is just a bit faster than 8800, but also gives way better TDP and DirectX support

Nice find, yeah they both trade blows.
But I am surprised at how poorly the gs 320mb did at bc2. But then I think that that data was made up. I doubt they would have dug out a 2006 gpu and tested on a 2010 game.
Not to mention the different hardware they used at different years hence why I think that they compare websites dont really work too well unless they dont upgrade other hardware (unlikely) or keep testing ancient cards on the latest hardware (unlikely).

But yeah the gt240 is the way to go for the reasons you mentions as well as the fact that the 8800 gts uses double the power!
