Well, if he could run it on that with a GB of ram... I think it would do a bit better on the Zacate platform. In reviews I've read, it does as good as Core i5 dual core notebooks

Which aren't slouches, I've used quite a few and they are SNAPPY to say the least.

so i bet my boss i could build him a better computer than the one sitting in his desk for about 400, he actually called my bluff and now i stand to get 150 if i can do it.
now it shouldnt be too hard because he's got a pos bestbuy server sitting in there, but my problem is that there are way too many choices.

so far i figured i get a
965 x4 cpu
with a Biostar N68S3+ Socket AM3 MCP68S mATX AMD Motherboard
some g.skill for it
a cheap 400 watt psu from antec
and maybe a cheap case from antec as well..

what do you guys think?
ill probably be reusing his hdd since its got company info on it.
and i already found a good liteon dvd drive for about 18.

any other builds welcome.
thanks!

cpu: AMD x4 840 3.2ghz
mobo: biostar a7803L
ram: kinston hyperX 4gb(2x2gb) 1600
gpu: Asus engts450 gts 450 1gb
psu: antec neo 520
hdd: WD caviar blue 500gb 7200rpm
case: HEC blitz (poor man's antec 902 clone)
drive: samsung sh-s2223c 22x sata

Assuming u live outside of California, it puts u at grand total $399 + $9 shipping. Keep in mind you will also get -$35 from mail-in-rebates.
Therefore true final price is $365.

Depending how u see this, u could upgrade to the Nvidia 460 / ATI 5770 which is the same price as the Nvidia 450 ($100) after rebate.

The same applies to the cpu. Drop down to an AMD x2 255 3.1ghz and save another $50. Most games wont take advantage of 4 cores, but it's nice having extra horsepower for other pc applications/multitasking.

I'm not too big a fan of most build suggestions so far. First and foremost OP's original board choice WON'T run 965 as it is not rated for 125W processors. Everyone else's suggestions (except the Zacate one but only if you're looking for a really ultraportable build) aren't too optimal.
A variation of the xd Number Cruncher would be perfect:

Phenom II x4 820 - $105
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO + GT 430 - $139, $109 AR [wait for mobo to go back in stock, should be soon]
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 2x2 - $45, $20 AR
Antec NEO ECO 400W - $35
HEC Blitz + DVD - $53
Total cost before rebates: $377
After rebates: $322

Umm, what specs does ur boss have in his current machine? It might make more sense to focus on the things the "average" person sees as good specs, like more ram and bigger storage. If you put a quad core in there, ur boss probably wont know the difference between a phenom ii and an athlon ii. Most ppl i talk to will give me the amount of ram and storage capacity their computer has if i ask them for their specs. Maybe get an athlon ii and spend the extra money to get 8 GB of ram, and spend $15 more on a Samsung F3 1TB hard drive? Only because you have $150 on it....

Biostar makes quality motherboards. MSI does not. Tell me how many people you can find online who had a Biostar break, then find how many people see an MSI light on fire from bad VRM cooling.
