Overlocking a Phenom II x4 970

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey every1. got a question for all of you AMD overclockers.

I have a AMD Phenom II X4 970. want to OC it to 4,1 MHZ and 1,4 V. Heard this is possible. I'm installing a Cooler Master V8 CPU cooler for the processor. Is that ok for OC to 4,1 MHZ?

And what program should i use to OC?

All chips are different and take different voltages to get to different clock speeds, its all trial and error.

Best advise i can give is to use baby steps, small amounts at a time, with a stress test to confirm stabilty.

NEVER use windows overclocking programs, do it all in the BIOS, there are dozens of overclocking guides on here, it might be a good idea to have a read of a few before diving into the overclocking world.

The V8 is a decent cooler, an its seated and providing its seated properly with decent paste, you have a chance of getting to 4.1

As said, take it a little at a time, bump up the clock, see if its stable, if its not, pop the voltage up a little!

Hey there!

Don't know about the efficiency of the CM V8, but i think it will do.
I always liked to do things on BIOS, but you can use AMD Overdrive to change a few sttings within windows.
To reach 4.1GHZ you only need to srt your CPU multiplier at 20.5x, and increase a little the voltage so it handles rock stable with that OC. I don't know if 1.4V is enough for that...
Start increasing the multiplier and checking on temps.

I did not do how paulharrison tells us to do ;p.

I took no baby steps, I jumped right from 2,8ghz to 4ghz with a decent/high vcore.

Then I startet to lower my vcore to see how low I can go with it @ 4ghz.

But as you were kinda new to this I recommend what paul said above.

Okei. thanks guys.
Im quite fresh at these things, and dont really know what end to begin from=)

I hear from other ppl too that baby steps are the way to go. But can I increase the multiplier within AMD overdrive? Or what program would you suggest?

And whats the difference between doing it in i.e AMD Overdrive vs in the BIOS?

Best regards, and thumps up for good replies

If you do something wrong you'll know by taking baby steps within BIOS. If you alreay are in windows, if your system crashes you may not know what went wrong.
Besides, sometimes you can't change some settings at windows that are available in BIOS.I find it easier in BIOS too

Okei man=) thx. will look into the matter soon. hopefully i can get it up to 3,9 atleast. my computer is so immensly noisy right now , so hopefully the V8 cooler will cool it down with less decibel!
