The game was built for the PC, but Valve made a copy for the PS3 that is supposed to be exactly the same as the PC version, including Steam/Steamworks. The one major positive from PS3/PC/Mac all being able to play together on co-op is that there will always be tens of thousands of players online to play with. You're essentially combining the PC/Mac and PS3 audiences. There will always be tens of thousands online for both platforms.

wiki states it's source. And from what I've seen of portal 2, it's looking really good. I mean the game has it's own artistic style and does not aim for realism. Now if they were to release HL3 I think it'd be wise to release a new engine at the same time. Maybe that's what's taking them so long with ep3/hl3.

The entire point of Source engine is that it is very modular and stuff can be easily added on. They have been adding stuff on, slowly, but it seems that Valve isn't interested in keeping up with the graphics race. If they wanted to upgrade source to be more current, they could, there is no point in starting from scratch.

Case in point: Cryengine. Cryengine 1 (used in Far Cry) was modified to Cryengine 2, used in Crysis, and then modified again to Cryengine 3. The only difference between the evolution of Source and Cryengine is that valve slowly tacks on a couple new features per release, and doesn't change the name, and Crytek puts on a bunch of features and changes the name. Valve could operate like Crytek and add on a bunch of new stuff, the engine would be totally fine with that, but they have chosen for the past 6 years to not worry too much about the graphics improvements.
