Recommendation for laptop from Staples

Thread Starter
I have access to around $550 worth of staples rewards. I am looking for a (gaming?) laptop for around that price, maybe a bit more, and have not had any luck browsing their site. Gaming would definitely be a plus, as of now, I can't game with friends who have gaming laptops, unless I want to stay at home and use my desktop. Most important factors are graphics card and battery life. A high screen resolution is also nice. Don't care about size or weight. These were the best I could come up with:

http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilion-d...P4118:CL161747

Looks like the 6370m is the best I'm going to get, and the best Staples has to offer at $999 is the Envy 14 with a 5650m. Would I just be better off getting the Dell with the i5-480m and GMA4500 and call it a day? That should still be at least able to handle Minecraft, right?

The only real things the HP has over the Dell is the Blu-Ray player and bigger battery. Neither of them have very good graphics capabilities. The HP is not worth the money in my opinion. In your price range, I would look at a 15" laptop with better specs myself.

It depends on what you'll be doing. If you only want light gaming like Minecraft or Counterstrike, the Dell with the integrated GPU will do fine.

The i5 cpu is a good deal faster than the AMD Phenom cpu, while the AMD GPU is much better than the intel integrated graphics.

The 6370m is a decent lower-mid tier (upper class 3 according to notebookcheck) GPU that can play games like SC2 and COD:MW2 with lowered settings, and older games like Oblivion, FEAR, Doom3, and HL2/Source games, etc on high.

However, I think you can still get a better deal. (I've seen laptops with better GPUs for less)

Yeah, Staples is a pretty bad place to go for gaming laptops. Only issue is the $550 worth of rewards that needs to go. I wanted to get in at least some MW2 as well, apparently the 6370m can play that at native resolution with eye candy turned off. The only thing that pisses me off about the DV7 is that they didn't stick an i5 into it. The screen resolutions aren't great on either, I wanted a 1920x1080.

Is the Intel GMA HD that much worse when compared to the 6370/5470? I think the HP is worth it, as the 9-cell, plus the 6370, plus the blu-ray drive, and the 2 HDD slots are worth the extra $50 it costs.

Avoid the GMA like the plague.

The new GMA HD is apparently better than the 4500MHD, but I just tested it on a relative's laptop today and it honestly sucked. Hoping the 6370s better; I'm going to head into Staples with some benchmarking tools

I would get the 6370 GPU laptop personally, if you only had those two choices. But with that many rewards, that would make the Envy a worthy buy for $450! Too bad that laptop is overpriced as hell, $999 is slightly higher than most places.
