Which MMO to subscribe to?

Thread Starter
I've never played MMOs before, but suddenly, after watching "The Guild," I now have a great desire to play them. I'm considering getting either WoW or Rift, but I am unsure which game to try.

Basically, I'm pretty laid back and I like PvE over PvP. I would prefer an MMO where the community is generally friendly and communicates via microphone.

Any suggestions?

Well You'll get tons of differing opinions here....

I will say that I have played just about every pay to play mmo that is out right now as well as over 30 free to play mmo's.

In my opinion there is simply no better mmo out right now then WoW.

People bash it but there is no denying it's easily the most polished and bug free mmo of them all. It's also very established and population is great.

I will say though that the community has seemed to have gotten worse since the last expansion. Sometimes people aren't all that noob friendly.

My brother and I are playing DC Universe. Its great so far. I hate MMORPGs and this one is managing to keep my attention.

I would agree to an extent. The WoW community is full of jack-asses (although the same can be said for most MMOs). If you want something very similar to WoW, I'd suggest Rift if you want something new, or Everquest 2 (if you want something well established, since the 7th expansion just came out for that). But no MMO on the planet rivals my all-time favorite and the one I played for 5 years. FFXI. Unfortunately, it's quite dated now, and although they've taken many, many steps to shift it away from the huge grind-fest it was, the changes simply can't bring me back to it. The community in that game (at least on my server) was unbeatable anywhere (and I've played a dozen different MMOs.)

Just play WoW to start off with, get into a leveling guild and you will have a blast. WoW is the most basic MMO out and has more than 10 million active players for a reason.

Well, it looks like WoW is a $100 upfront payment for all the expansion packs and such...

Rift is newer, but it looks promising.

You don't have to buy the game right off the bat (that is the worst approach to playing an MMO), just get a trial edition and see if it tickles your fancy.
But the WoW trial takes away alot of little features of the game, WoW is very easy to understand plus you have to play it a certain way (rotations) which is lame but oh well.

The best MMO currently out IMO is DCUO. Great game.

LOTRO is also great, and it's F2P, so you can play it for free, but if you want the full experience, I'd recommend you subbing to that game, but with the f2p, you can play till around lvl 32 or so for free and not miss much.
