2x10,000rpm RAID 0 vs. SSD?

Hey there all -

Just built up my sig rig around holiday time. I am very pleased with the HDD setup (2x300GB WD Velociraptor raid0 stripe), as I used a single 7200rpm drive in my last build. However, I recently acquired a new 128GB SSD from Toshiba (MMDOE28G5MSP-0VA) for a screaming good deal.

So I am now torn on how to set up my rig. Do I..

-Set up the SSD as my main boot/app drive, and use the Velociraptors as a secondary storage, along with my 1TB backup

-Sell the Velociraptors (only been used for a couple months) and keep the $ or possibly get another 128GB SSD for raid 0 SSD.

-Just keep my current sig rig setup and throw the SSD into my 13" MacBook pro in the optical drive slot (with an adapter) as my main boot/app drive. (500GB 7200 RPM as main drive right now)

My main uses on my sig rig are gaming, video encoding, web lurking surfing, and minor photo editing. Nothing too nutty, and I really only boot my machine once (if that) a day.

I use my MBP on the go and for work things, and schoolin. Admittedly, I am on my sig rig a lot more than my laptop, but I do use my laptop a good amount.

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?

that SSD is still fast than those Velociraptors.

Do like me, SSD boot drive, 2x velociraptor raid 0 for games and apps, and 1tb drive for storage and backup. ;-)

here are two VRaptor 300 gigs drives in RAID 0, short stroked, with an 85 gig partition between the two... Its pretty sweet... Its my windows 7 boot...

yep, that should work out great all around.

Use the SSD as the boot. Don't get another as even with a great deal, it is a old gen SSD. Better to spend money on a Sandforce SSD or C300. 90MB write is still good. Stick it and all core program needed on the SSD. Stick any files you need to recall quickly on the Raptors and probably games though really no point lol.

/shrug. That would be what I would do. And as for the laptop...do you work from there too? Honestly I would leave it as if you have both odds are you do work on the desktop.

Thanks for all of the input! Unfortunately one thing that I forgot to mention is the space factor in my mid-tower case. As you can see below - I don't have a lot of space to work with for my HDD's, and I do plan to crossfire 6870s within the next year. That will require some serious revamping of the internals.

I will end up having to move HDDs up into the other 3.5" bays and possibly using an adapter for a 5.25" bay to host my 1TB and SSD or something.

Either way - thanks for the benchmarks on your Raptor RAID 0, I haven't bothered to test mine, so I will have to check that out. I have seen some threads on how to optimize your settings in Win7 with SSD so I will look into that also.

I will prolly go with this. Any tips you have for me on how to keep a good backup of system image etc from SSD and the raptor raid? (Windows backup?) Do you have OS/main apps on the SSD also?

This is really an amazing upgrade from my single 7200rpm drive and I feel totally spoiled right now but hey, tax return season rocks =)

I would say go with this, I'm going to get this same set up as soon as I can buy it all together.
