Trouble with which body to choose

I had a d200, but I sold that because I've been reading a number of reviews that said the difference in the color rendition of recent cameras completely blow the d200 away, so now I'm torn between the d300, d90, or the d5000(maybe the 5100 if its not overpriced). I do like the sort of tanky feel of the pro bodies, but I don't know if its worth the extra ~2-300 dollars over the d90 and d5000. D7000 is out of the question cause it's just way out of my budget, which is around 1200~1300, just enough for the body and a good nifty fifty(planning on getting the sigma 50 1.4, don't care what you guys say about it being 3rd party and such, it is bokehlicious). My main concern between these bodies is the iso performance and ergonomics, since all three already have good IQ and a lot of features. No I am not going to switch to Canon, kind of lost trust in them after its 3 new bodies.

Actually I'm considering the Canon 40d as well, as it appears to also be very good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't color rendition in digital cameras the result of in-body PPing and irrelevant when shooting in RAW?

I haven't handled the D200 or D300 so I can't comment on those bodies, but I would choose the D90 over the D5000. The D90 feels better with its more robust body, is nice knowing it as partial weather sealing, and a second dedicated aperture control is always great to have. It's one of those things that you never really love until it's gone from you.

As for the 40D, it is an excellent camera. However, I'd like to point you to the 50D CLP price just dropped for the 50D so it's going for $500-something now. Not bad if you can get your hands on a broken Canon P&S!

I have a D2H and a D90 myself, and the biggest difference I can spot between the two cameras is the dynamic range.
I compared the two of them here: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/...ssages/1425468

Don't read the text, just see if you can spot which ones come from my 8 year old D2H, and which ones are from the D90.

(The ones with an underscore before the filename are from the D2H)

Two of my friends who are working professionals shoot the D300. They're great cameras, but I hate their control layout and ergonomics. I know one of them is looking into th D700, and he's probably willing to let the gripped D300 go for a good price. PM me if you're interested I suppose.

canon isnt actually well known for their colors....flesh tones are a bit "grey" SOOC. might want to consider that before jumping to canon.

Thanks guys, I decided to go with the 40d due to my budget, plus I got a pretty good deal on it (5 extra cf cards totaling to 22gb). Probably wish I coulda gone for that d300, but then again the only real thing enticing about it is its monstrous 51 af points, but w/e if people can take jaw-dropping pics wit p&s or entry levels, then I should be lucky to be able to get a 40d

FWIW, I think he was looking for ~1000 for a gripped D300 (with all orig packaging) and a couple CF cards. I don't know how in or out of your budget that is, thought I would just throw it out there.

That would have been in my budget, but I would have been left with a 50mm 1.8 or something like that =/ thanks anyways
