How will not using TRIM affect my SSD in the future?

Hello everyone, I am currently using a Crucial C300 on an older AM2 board that does not support AHCI and therefore it doesn't support TRIM either.

I am planning to upgrade to SB when the motherboards become available again and my question is whether or not this will degrade the performance of my drive for when I am using it in a proper modern system.

I have already seen a decent performance drop (I've been running a lot of benchmarks ) and pretty much am wondering if I should just wait to use the drive until I upgrade to preserve its performance.

Yes, performance degradation is permanent. Flash cells will wear out over time, due to their limited number of write cycles. However, most of the performance drop you've experienced is reversible if you secure erase the drive.

I understand that SSD's degrade over time because they have a limited amount of write cycles but I was under the impression that TRIM was used to tell the drive which blocks are actually empty, and had nothing to do with the actual NAND cells degrading.

I have already experienced this once, after seeing my read/write rates drop to almost half of what I saw after first using the drive I had to reinstall Win7 (unrelated) and after a fresh install of the OS I saw my read/write speeds go back to ample performance levels.

No, performance degradation to dirty blocks is NOT permanent. A secure erase will bring the performance back to original.


Flash wear is a separate issue.

SSD performance will degrade drive performance, and then the drive will eventually fail due to the limited number of write cycles. Is this not correct?

Don't get me wrong, SSDs are fantastic. Once you get one, you'll never want to go back to a 7200RPM or even 10000RPM HDD.
