[Androidized] Motorola Xoom Will Launch Without Flash

Thread Starter
Flash has been one of the main selling points for Android tablets, including Motorola Xoom, which has this ad promoting browsing Flash based sites, but it looks like Xoom won’t have this functionality at launch

You can download flash 10.1 on the market, not a big deal.

It's not on the market yet for the Xoom. No biggie though. Flash is nice, but not necessary.

You have to remember that this is a tablet and one of its main selling points is internet browsing, and flash is a very important part of the internet. I expect our friends over at XDA will have solutions within hours though

I agree, and I also think they should have waited for flash before selling the Xoom since they are using it as a main feature to sell it, but iPad users seem to be alright without it...

It's amazing what you will deal with just to have the "coolest" phone. When I was an iPhone user, even jailbroken with frash, I just didn't mind the lack of FULL flash support on the phone. I found myself getting (I admit now, bakasswardsly) irritated at website designers who had entire sites in flash with no alternative though... I there will never be a perfect phone for the time being... guess you have to deal with something you don't like with almost anything in life...

If you watch the videos Moto has out there on "the making of" and promotional videos for the Xoom, it does seem odd that they would launch w/o flash considering how much they promote it.

Yes otherwise the ads would all be stationary and not go "YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY WON CLICK TO THE BUTTON TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE!"

Flash is used for 3 things:
  • Ads
  • Games
  • Videos
Games are iffy without any proper keyboard and mouse interface, Videos are better served using h.264 and hardware decoding. So the main thing that works using flash are ads. I had frash on my ipad, and no games would work since there wasn't a mouse, and videos worked a whole lot better using HTML5. So I don't see the point of flash.

Adobe has said that Flash will be available in a few weeks. That's not a big deal for me. The device has already been rooted and clockwork installed, so anything software related that Motorola doesn't fix, XDA will.

You also have to remember that moto decided to release a device way ahead of the OS being mainstream. You can only just recently get the SDK for android 3.0. They haven't even finished rolling out 2.3 yet, and that has been up on SDK for a while now. So they choose an OS that doesn't have support, so things like flash not being developed is to be expected.
on the flip side, they did market as having flash and all that, Adobe should have pushed more to get at least basic level flash for the device ready.
