First overclock I7-960

Firstly I would like to say hi to everyone and briefly introduce myself.

I am pretty much a beginner at overclocking and have been reading all the guides I can find to make a successful stable overclock. With that said I have yet to start and I am making a thread to sort of mark my progress/ get advice etc.

I believe I have set up my profile correctly to show what my current specs are. I am aiming to achieve a 3.6 overclock, however I am really aiming to get the most out of my cpu without going to crazy. As such I have a couple questions that would really help me out.

Right now I have a I7-960 that at stock runs at 3.2, if I were to manage to successfully overclock to 3.6-3.8 how much would this affect its lifespan? If I manage to keep the voltages around stock and keep the temperature under control.

Another question which sort of ties in with my previous one would be what sort of temps/volts would be considered ok for 24/7 usage?

Oh and finally what I think would be the biggest help for me is if anyone with roughly similar specifications post what they managed to achieve with what settings.

Welcome to OCN

3.6 -3.8 won't effect lifespan if done right. In fact you could likely undervolt it from stock @3.6 -3.8 depending on chip thus increasing its lifespan.

His are all listed for 920's or 930's but will work for a 960. If you want to take advantage of the extra multipliers on the 960's adjustments could be made to do so. Or you just do it the old fashioned way starting from scratch wink.gif.

Looks good. Test it out with Intel Burn Test and Prime 95. Watch temps of course while doing so (especially IBT) but at that voltage it shouldn't be a problem at all temp wise.

Hey, thanks for the quick replies.

Just a couple more questions with regard to stability testing.

I have been using Real Temp to monitor temperatures is that all right?

Also what test do you reckon I should run on Intel Burn Test and Prime 95 (Just did an Intel Burn Test on “high” Real Temp reported a min of 42 and max of 69).

For Prime 95 how long should I run a specific test for, i see that some people run it for quite a long time. Finally with the temps I noticed Real Temp reporting a 72 (Prime 95, forgot witch test) do you have a recommended time to stop a test? As in what temp range should I stop the test as to not risk damage etc.

Real Temp will work and is one of my favorites. You might find the program HWMonitor handy as well.

Intel Burn Test. Set the thread number yourself. I'd shoot for 20 passes on High or Very High. Then move on to Prime 95. I tend to look at IBT as for getting me close before I go to the trouble of running Prime 95.

Prime 95, I like to run a min. of 10 hours of small fft. first and then 12+ hours of Blend. If you fail small it is nearly always vcore. Where Blend uses alot more memory.

Keep the max temps on the cores below 80C.

Sorry I have not replied to the thread in a while had some exams and assignments due.

I managed to achieve a stable 3.5 and now im trying to get 3.8.

I seem to be having some trouble getting the system stable, these are my current settings which I had the best luck with (please let me know if I have anything set to something which is not safe for 24/7 usage or may cause damage).

With these settings I got to 15/20 on very high on IBT before a blue screen. Any idea where to go from here?

Also I seem to be having an issue with real temp, it seems to report somewhat random temperature dip/spike where it may jump from a temperature such as 71 to 50 or 60 during a stress test.

Hardware monitor seems to produce more constant temperatures not sure which one to trust.

Increase vcore definitely. All your other voltages are fine for the clocks you are looking for.

Just upped the CPU voltage to 1.22500 passed 20 runs of IBT on very high, however the temps seem to be worrying me.

However when monitoring the temperatures they all seemed to stay around 70-73 with once in a while a jump to 74 (on hardware monitor) and a somewhat extreme jump to above 75 (on Real Temp).

Do you guys think it’s safe to leave my computer to run Prime 95 while I sleep with these sort of temperatures, or do you think I should maybe back off on my overclock.

those temps are in spec and would be about what you see on a good air cooler if your cooling with something other than air or a h50 we might have to look at it closer
