im building a new system and i have a creative xi-fi xtreme gamer card. is this card still superior to the onboard flavors now. i know dedicated sound cards are superior to onboard and that's a well known fact.

It will be better than any on board sound you can get. The only way to improve it would be to buy another card, end even then I very seriously doubt you will see any difference.

No matter how much "sound" technology progresses, current quality hardware will never be outdated. There just isn't that much room for improvement in audio when compared to video/processing power.

Recently compared my gamer vs onboard. I liked the card better. Bought it many, many moons ago too.

i've been using my on-board Realtek ALC892 because my PCI slot is positioned between my graphics cards, and i didn't want to install my XtremeGamer and starve them. last weekend i decided to temporarily put it in and see what i was missing by using on-board sound. night and day difference. the XtremeGamer is a very well designed card. i pulled out the XtremeGamer and ran to Best Buy to pick up a PCI-E X-Fi Titanium so that i can install it away from my graphics cards. i notice no appreciable difference between the Titanium and the XtremeGamer. install the XtremeGamer and don't look back.

the only issue i ran into with the XtremeGamer is that Creative has neutered their recent drivers and they won't allow you to install this card on Windows 7. i had to use an older driver i still had saved on my HD.
