not being able to overclock i3 540

Thread Starter
hi everyone,
i'm hoping one of you better skilled chaps (or gals) can help me with a problem i've got with my i3 540. my rig is msi h55m-ed55, 4gb 1333mhz hypertec ram and i 3 540, it's a K0 stepping if that helps?
got this rig last week under advisement from a mate who had the exact kit and could manage 4.2ghz on 1.302v. thing is i cannot breach 3.4ghz on stock volts or even when i push it up to 1.36v and i'm not too comfortable to push it much higher because i'm aware around 1.4v can kill clarkdale's off? Also, another strange thing is that if i can get it to 180x23= 4ghz(or thereabouts) cpuid will only report 3348ghz then dump me out of windows,in fact all it seems to do above 3.4ghz is blue screen and dump me out of windows and sometimes it'll dump me out at stock too

i've disabled eist, c1e, overclock threshold disabled. i've tried to adjust volts, qpi and everything else i researched, from here and everywhere else on the net. i'm not new to overclocking but i am new to core "I" and socket 1156?
any help is much appreciated,

cheers,
andy

Ok, are you on stock cooler?
Are you adjusting the ram multiplier?

no it's not stock,it's an artic cooling 7 rev 2. i've tried adjusting the multi/ ratio and it doesn't seem to make any difference to stability? it's really frustrating!

Ok

Do this

Raise the BCLK to 181
LLC On
Vcore - 1.3v
Mem Ratio x 6
QPI Link Ratio x 36
QPI/VTT Voltage - 1.29v

Then see if you can get those settings to pass a stress test, make sure load temps are under 70

thanks for the welcome chinesethunda! @fallen angel,i've just tried your suggestions and bios reported 181x23=4163, however once booted, cpuid shows 3314 and so does windows??? I'm so very confused it has to be said! setting are this, cpu: 181x 23 =4163, QPI 7964, Cpu v 1.32, CPU VTT 1.29( wont do 1.26) everything else is set to auto. EIST, C1E , CPU Amplitude is 900mv and Overclock threshold are all disabled!!
It's all very, very strange and it makes no sense because one day it did boot at 3.7xxghz at stock, ran P95 for 12hrs but it reset the bios when i needed to reboot!
I'm getting quite frustrated now!! (i've been at this since last friday!)

Maybe its downclocking automatically for some reason, what does it say in cpuz when it is stressed?

Also what does it say in windows system info about your cpu frequency

it still says that its 3348 and window sys info says its 3.07ghz. i dont know if its a bios issue because i flashed it on the first day due to memory management blue screens etc, although i've since discovered that they can be caused by catalyst drivers?? one of the issues is that the company i bought the items from charge premium rate to call the technical support and they require you to, before you can RMA items and they suggest it will be a lengthy call (60p per min on a 10 min call is £6.00 gbp). hence me asking you boys and gals! i cannont understand if and why my sytem is clocking down from 181 to 150 BCLK or if it has been heard of before?
