Flow restriction

I am new, and I am trying to learn as much as I can about water cooling.

I am using the skinneelabs.com pump and rad optimizer spreadsheet to determine CPU block restrictions. Changing just the CPU block really changes the amount of flow, sometimes cutting it in half! Would the block with the best flow be the best block to use in my system? (out of all the choices i have, the Danger Den MC-TDX seems to have the best flow). My system will be built with an emphasis on function rather than form. I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing in my interpretation.

Are you buying your block new? Currently the best cooling is the EK supreme HF with the most restrictive plate. What pump are you planning on using?

My pump choice at the moment would be one of the D5 Varios. I'm trying to make the system as quiet and power efficient as I can. The CPU block would be a new purchase.

I have seen a lot of systems that use the EK Supreme HF, and I like the fact that the plates can be changed. My question was if a block flowed better, wouldn't that be the best choice for a system?

If you haven't selected a pump yet I would highly recommend you check out the MCP35X by swiftech as that is a pwm (motherboard speed controllable) pump that has excellent pump power (good head pressure which means that even in highly restrictive systems it will still produce good flow rates) for restrictive systems. check out this review my Martian:

Generally speaking, flowrate is important in removing heat but you have to remember that it's only one part of the equation, if your block has reached its saturation limit for how much heat it can remove (due to being under restrictive) then having more flow rate won't help, same thing if you have two little radiator area and your loop can't dissipate fast enough which will raise the overall temperature in your loop. I think that the if price isn't an issue the EK supreme HF is a very good choice. see the following graph i pulled from skinneelabs:



you can see that at every flow rate the temperature is better and not only that if you look at the graph you can see that other blocks at even higher flow rates do not cool as well. It might be the case that you have more flow rate with another block but still get worse cooling then you get with the HF. Of course you could get the MCP35X you'll have good flowrate even with the restriction.

most of the best performaing blocks have low flow rates, high flow aint everything

I created that tool and no, do not use it for selecting cpu block. Restriction is only important in determining how much pumping power you need. It has nothing to do with how the blocks perform thermally.

The tool is specifically an aid for pumping power selection. The radiator piece will also help you understand how much rad and fan you might need.

I'll be working on some updates to the tool soon, I have several new pump curves to add.

In order to transfer heat to the liquid better, blocks often include accelerator plates or other restrictive components to accelerate the liquid closest to the CPU core, essentially putting the coolest water available as close to the beat source as possible in the most turbulent way possible. That is why high flow rate is not king.
