Planning. $1000 Budget

Thread Starter
Selling old textbooks and tax return, I have about 1000$ budget. More than enough for a good gaming setup. I plan on keeping my case, monitor, sound card, and power supply from my sig. Everything else will be replace. First, I was planning on going with a Phenom 965 but with release of Sandy Bridge I change my mind. Just have to wait until the B3 stepping is release. (mid March??) I always used AMD in the past. This will be my first intel build. I'm not looking for a high end computer. Just a mid range. The most I'm willing to spend is 1000. Lower the price, the better.

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K
CPU Cooler: suggestion?
Motherboard: MSI P67-GD55 Or something better?
RAM: Suggestion? 4GB is enough
Hard Drive: Western Digital Black 1TB Sata3
GPU: EVGA 560ti or MSI 6870 Hawk
OS: Window 7 64bit

I also need a optical drive since my current one doesn't want to eject anymore. How good are ATI/AMD GPUs? I always use Nvidia. I may either run dual cards or get a Physx card. I don't know yet. I never OCed before. But I plan on trying it out. I may use my current cpu cooler, just get a second fan to save some money.

Looks good but i would change the hdd for spinpoint f3

Considering your budget you may have to go ati for bang for buck, Ati are better for this

Agree with whats below 212+ cooler is good for 4.5ghz on that cpu

Do you plan on High overclock ? otherwise, 212+ should be enough

Past two builds, I always use WD. Never had a problem. I heard good things about Samsung. I may try them out. Its cheaper, that's always a plus.

No. I never played with BIOs before other than changing Boot priority. Scared to screw something up. It will be a small OC. Just enough to get the feet wet.

Thinking about it. How would I go about using it just a boot drive? Is there a guide or do I have to use google.

Thats correct use an ssd for operating system and then a larger hdd for storage. It offers the most "noticeable" increase in performance out of any other hardware configuration

Simple to setup just load windows onto the sdd when you first boot up the pc. Just plug each drive into seperate sata ports on the motherboard

Sounds simple and easy. I also need a copy of windows 7 and a small basic external hard drive so I transfer my music collection onto the new hard drive. That's 18.3 GB of music.

OC on Sandy bridge is more than easy, i suggest you getting a cooler master 212+ as an after market cooler, offers great bank for the buk to be able to squeeze mid-low OC out of that chip.

Should I get another CPU heatstink or Can I use my current one? I have a Noctua NH-U12P cpu cooler. Very good and quiet. I contacted Noctua asking for updated mounting hardware, and they sent it for free. By adding a second fan, I got the NH-U12P SE2 for about 25$. A clean coat of themal paste and I should be fine.

use your current one then, stock coolers are crap. Even if i'm too poor to buy a after market myself ...
