Windows 7 Control Panel

Thread Starter
I just installed Windows 7 today, I got it free from school! Its pretty nice. Alot like Vista with a few rough edges smoothed out. Although, I find the control panel so annoying. Why did they get rid of the classic view?

You can change it to large or small icons but it still looks like crap. Is there any way to change it(regedit?) to the real classic view with icons like I rocked with until this point?

I always thought it was better than xp,with more options.I really don't see the difference between 7 and the classic xp control panel except that reason.

You can opt to see everything if you wish. Just open your CP and it's either to the Left or up top I forget which now, but you can see everything and while it's not exactly like XP it comes pretty close. wink.gif

Ahh it's to the upper right. It has a pull tab that lets you look at Lg or Sm Icons and to go back just scroll for Category. biggrin.gif

You don't get what I mean. tongue.gif The new one is more confusing.

Here is the control Panel in Vista(good):
attachment.php?attachmentid=197445&stc=1&d=1298682702

Windows 7 Control Panel(crap):
attachment.php?attachmentid=197444&stc=1&d=1298682702

Is there any way to get it to look like the Vista/Xp/2000/ME/98SE/98/95 one?

the large/small icon view in windows 7 control panel IS the classic view...or an approximation, i get asked this question a lot, there was a registry edit that use to exist to get the classic view that is like in vista, but it no longer exist.

I don't see it I guess they both look the same to me, only there are less items in the Vista workup while Win 7 has adapted to the newer technologies and added a few more features.

I'm not taking issue with you, just sayin that Win7 is most definitely better. Once you get used to it you'll go... "doh.gif now why didn't I think of that." and trust me cause I did the same thing. I really did not like 7 when I first installed it. Felt it was rather clunky in it's simplicity. But once I got used to it I was like "Ooooooooooooh, I get it now.thinking.gif"

The key to Windows 7 is the search bar, located on the bottom of your Start Up menu. This interface allows you to enter exactly what you wish to do into the search field, and the results are populated first from static Windows content, then by files. This is, undoubtedly, the fastest way to access anything in the control panel, or change any settings on your computer that were previous accessed in Windows XP by going from Start --> Control Panel --> .MSC--> etc

Start typing! See what happens! This was a huge step forward in Windows 7, as acclaimed by most reviewers and by most users-- there is no reason for you to navigate through massively long dialogs, rather you should just type exactly what you are looking for, and be directed, instantly smile.gif

That's all well and good when you know what you're searching for. But if your brain is stuck in reverse it can be a real hassle.wink.gif lol

i always change my cp in my startup menu to be a list instead of a link

you can right click start, properties, start menu, customize, and change a ton of things from there

its probably one of those things you will just have to get used to

Yeah I will probably get used to it. You whats funny though? When I bought Vista, I thought it was amazing and loved it straight off.

Minor 7 gripes:

They just threw a lot of things in different places it seems....kind of annoying, but manageable. As much as some people love it I'm not a huge fan of the Superbar either(To much blind clicking). Luckily its easy to switch back so I can see the names on the bar. biggrin.gif

Also annoying is the fact that DirectX does work when you install the OS, I had to Download 120MB of DirectX runtimes to play Lost planet. doh.gif

Either way, its working well, its stable, and a bit faster than Vista. smile.gif
