Can somebody give a quick bit of help with my mom's computer?

Thread Starter
My brother gave my mom his old computer, and I was hoping someone could give me a little bit of simple instruction on how to coax a little more speed out of it without burning it up. He is a gamer, and so even though the system has been around a little while it has solid components (PSU, CPU fan, etc). I just don't know that much about overclocking, and I can't be over at her house for hours at a time trying to figure it out. Is anybody familiar enough with the Bios of the Asus P5b (updated to the 2104 version) to give me some simple instructions for decent but not dangerous overclocking scenario for it with an Intel Q6700 CPU and G Skill 2x2GB (F2-8500CL5S) RAM? Your help is greatly appreciated already,
RDTinCO

i assume its the one in your sig?

that Q6700 should be fine, i would say 3.0ghz would be a mild OC for that chip.

also, the X1300 is going to be the limiting factor in games, that card is pretty dated.... it wont be horrible with moderate details on a smaller resolution (15-17" monitor)

I wondered about the video card- would a NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS PCI-e be any better? If not, can you recommend a couple of good models?

Thanks

Atleast: PNY Geforce 8600GT 512mb / Radeon HD3600

What you want: Geforce 9800GTX / GTX 260 / Radeon 5670

HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500GB or a Spinpoint F3. or.. any 128GB SSD. depending on your budget.

My brother said something about having the 8400GS in a box, is all. As far as the HD goes, actually, it has two 1.5 TB Samsung drives for storage (not that she really uses them) The 160 is just for windows, etc.

okay, I would recommend getting a SSD for Windows then. that will maximize performance in everything as the computer loads off the HDD read times.

if you can, get any of the cards I listed

Not that I mind the free advice- far from it- but we have gotten a little far afield from the original question about the settings for overclocking the P5B. Anybody out there got that combo, or know the settings I need?

Stop recommending videocards from 2007 and SSD's that will give no increase of fps in games. What the hell, people ?

If you want a good new video card just get a GTS 450 or a GTX 460. Also, you don't need to overclock that CPU, it is fast enough for what you have now (x1300/8400gs).

So why do you need to overclock a pc for your mom? What does she do that she needs an overclocked cpu? If you can explain that, I'm willing to help. I've never overclocked a pc for a Mom. lol. She won't get coupons from the internet any faster
