Weird GPU Issues

Thread Starter
Alright, ive got one for you GPU experts. Im pretty sure it might be an extreamly easy one too.

Alright, so ive recently been having pretty major problems with my ghetto X800 GTO.. Basicly, there have been lines that pop up horizontaly near the bottom of the screen about about 15 minutes of regular computing. Very annoying.

I take out the X800, and plug the monitor into the mobo's GPU, no problems at all, even after a few hours of being on the computer. So i know it is the X800's fault.

Im pretty sure it is a overheating issue. I take out the GPU, and the heatsink is just coated in dust. I vacume it all out, it looks like new. About 30 minutes ago i put it back in, thought the problem was fixed, 15 minutes into playing FSX, it does the lines again. Not even 5 minutes after that, the display on my monitor shuts off saying that it cant find a source. Then the computer just restarts/

Anyone know a solution to this?

Is the fan spinning up on the card at all? Is it making any funny noises?

Just make sure all the components of your computer are seated/connected properly. Make sure you have no debris on the motherboard or the graphics card...or any other part of the computer. Double check your connections and use some canned air to blow out any loose stuff. Keep the inside of the case clean.

reseat it and apply new thermal paste -- Then try again. Keep your case open and run a fan on it and see if that stalls it at all either.

That will rule out if it's really a heat issue.

I would suggest dismantling the fan assembly completely and wiping down the whole PCB very carefully, with alcohol and a swab. That's what I do for overheating cards.

Im not sure exactly how to get that fan off it though. Ill send you a picture of the GPU, its like its screwed in, with no way to get them out. I will have to take a second look at the card when the computer is off though

Okay, no lines yet. Very weird preformance though. The game will run smoothly, then suddenly freeze for a second or two, then go back to running smooth. This will happen about 2 times a minute
