Is it safe to unlock Core on my mobo?

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I have unlocked the core to make my cpu quad ( B50 )and it works fine ( i've only tested it for about 3-4 hours ) but after reading up a bit some say you shouldn't unlock on some mobos with 3+1 ( whatever this means :S )

anyway my cpu is 95watt ( I think )and the motherboard supports no idea
( says nothing in manual or online )

Motherboard : Asrock M3A UCC AMD 480X Socket AM3

Cpu: AMD Athlon II x3 450 3.2ghz

Any Mr brains out there that can confirm my pc wont go BOOOM or go on fire ^^

Thanks =)

You'll be fine, your board won't explode lol. I wouldn't overclock it much or at all if your motherboard hasn't got a very good phase design.

I dont plan to overclock it, i just wanted to take advantage of the quad core, Thats if it doesn't break my pc.

I must be so thick that i dont know what phase is - back to school for me =)

Your board is rated 125W... albeit stupidly. A lot of low end board manufacturers do it wrong and rate their 3+1 boards 125W, unlike Gigabyte doing it right by limiting to 95W. These VRMs are not only 3+1 and unheatsinked, they look to be a very very cheap 2 transistor design. I'd recommend taking a step back.... both with the unlock and literally from your rig before you start seeing smoke

Is it bad that they rate them 125W? how is my mobo 3+1 when i can see 6 of those black squares? i've circled them in the pic, also what if i put copper heatsinks on these? will i then be able to go for the 4th core without killing my machine? I dont plan to OC the cpu just unlock the core, also i have the hyper 212 plus.

The lower 2 could be for PCI-e

you have to look at the top right.
those at the middle are either for the northbridge or for the rams.

xd_1771 said that my mobo could go into smoke, so if put heatsinks on them their less likely to go right? do i heatsink the squares i've circled or the mosfets? or both?

You should heatsink them if you're going to unlock
