Windows 7 Performance loss?

Thread Starter
This is a difficult question, but likely can be answered simply.

Lately my computer has been extremely slowing down, I went through the first few thoughts.

1) Virus..

I searched computer with MalwareBytes, and Norton.. Nada

2) Performance Hogger

As far as I can tell there is plenty of performance room not even being used... yet I get performance problems.

So basically I am getting performance lag, while having more then enough power that's not even being used...

I have done the basics, but maybe I am forgetting something.

Suggestions or Questions Welcome.

Charlie the unicorn WIN.

I had that problem, for me the culprit was WINDOWS.
It had tried a automatic update, and not all the files got copied for some reason, it did half the job, then decided it couldnt update (told me my version was "modded" (it was a clean install)

Anyway, got annoyed, reinstalled windows, installed the update, (service pack 1) didnt tell me I was modded... fast as it was before that problem!

(by problem, i mean the loading screen time went from 1 second to 1 minute)

Id suggest, crap cleaner, and a sweep with advanced system optimizer 2 (harder to find than the recent v3, but fully enabled and works a charm)

They find dead links, bad registry, loops....... all sorts of crap, And fix it, used both for 3+ years, always fixed my problems

EDIT.

Hope i am allowed to place links, if not remove.

www.rapidshare.com/files/123949547/asov2.exe

Thats asov2 the version you want, its a full 30 day trial Use the 3 tools on the first page.

3. defrag (?)
4. chkdsk (?)
5. S.M.A.R.T status (?)

when you ran the antivrus programs were you in regular or safe mode? as this can affect the results of either.

when did the problems start? after a update, or installation of new software or hardware, or just suddenly?

i honestly don't think "formatting and reinstalling" is a diagnostic or even fix, its just "erasing" a problem you couldn't diagnose, and it could easily be something that can come back again, and you would be in the same boat.

there are several options you haven't tried, try some i've suggested, see if they help out, if not try to find the root cause, in most cases like this it is a "troubled" harddrive, there are plenty of tools out there, like from the manufacture to test the drive for performance and/or to detect problems, i'd start at the harddrive.

I just got Advanced System Optimizer,I will post results, and I will check with CCleaner.

I will also defrag tonight. I will post results, if it's not fixed at least we will have lowered down the causes...

Did you get the one provided on that link? I cannot vouch for asov3 as I havent used it. Dont use the "registry defrag" on the second page, it doesnt seem to work so good with win 7. As for the rest of the tools, they work fine

If it's slowing down to a point where it's really slow, it could also be that the HDD is failing. You could try Seatools and do a long test on the HDD.
