Problems Overclocking E8400 4Ghz

Thread Starter

Hello everyone, several days now im trying to Overclock my system on E8400 at 4Ghz but no luck.. I can have it stable easy at 3,6 or 3,7.. My specs :

OS: Windows 7
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L
RAM:

(Cant find specs on google but its 5-5-5-15 on 2.1V)
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Frio

So i have read lots of threads last days.. I managed to get to 410x9 FSB , 1.32vcore ,Ram multiplier x2 on 820fsb and default settings on timings and NB-FSB volts .. only +0.3 to dram to match 2.1 of corsair recommended . My temps are sweet 51 C maxtemp on 8hour prime95

After i try 420x9 my Mobo posts but wont boot to windows.. i aslo notched NB to +0.2 and FSB to +0.2 , vcore to 1.38 and loosen timings on ram ( 5-7-7-24-68) but still nothing.. i get a blue screen when windows start to boot..

Am i missing something ? Im not realy experienced in Overclocking but seems like my ram is refusing to work at this FSB even though its rated for 1066 which means i dont push then i guess.. Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Can your mobo handle that FSB? Not too familiar with those boards, but I would verify the max FSB your boards can handle. Lower you CPU multi and ram divider and find out how high your FSB will go.

No it doesn't mean that. Just wanted to make sure your mobo could handle it. You should be able to run your memory at rated speeds regardless.

You may need more vCore. Also, what is your CPU Termination set to?

To get my E5300 to 3.8GHz I had to use 1.425V vCore and 1.3V FSB Termination.

Your chip should hopefully be able to do better at lower voltage though.

If you can boot and run fine at 533x6 it's not RAM or NB. Can you get any more out of it by bumping VCore?

Try fixing VTT at 1.25

Is the E8400 a C0 or E0 revision?

Download and run CPUZ, then post a screenshot of the first tab.

That should help us to know roughly what kind of vcore you need.

I guess VTT voltage is the FSB voltage right ? I cant find the stock actual values on the internet anywere and my bios option only lets me to notch it up by +0.1 to +0.3

I tried at 533x7 with +0.2 FSB and +0.1NB voltage and vcore= 1.40
Here is a screenshot of CPU-Z :

Its E0 revision , Bios Vcore is at 1.40 dont know why CPUZ stuck at 1.21v

Should i try 533x7.5 with these settings ?

Stock VTT is 1.2 I believe? This is interesting because your board has plenty of chops if it can run 533 FSB stable. I don't remember if there were ever FSB holes with P35s, but you should try 500x8 with 1.38VCore and 1.25 VTT and see if you can boot.

I used to run into FSB holes with NVidia chipsets but I don't think I ever saw that on an intel, but it's worth a shot.

If 500x8 doesn't work, try 500x7.5.

Let me know how it goes, there's no reason an E0 shouldn't hit 4.0 at or less than 1.4VCore if you have a board that can crank out 500+ FSB stable. I really want to see you get 4.0.

The next thing to try would be to try again for 420x9 with 1.38VCore and 1.25VTT, then bump VTT a notch and retry to see if you get a boot. Stop at 1.35-1.36 if it's not making any difference. Neither of my E8400s needed VTT bumps to hit 4.0, but each combo is different.

Turn the Static tRead Value (Performance Level in these Gigabyte boards) to Manual and try 8. If not stable try 9 or 10. If you put this at auto it will be to tight at higher FSB speeds. Especially if you use Turbo or Extreme Performance Enhance.
