If the laser is infrared you can't see it.

My imperator had a funny warning on the box: Although you will not see the light from the sensor, it might still damage your eyes to look at it. Please don't look directly at the sensor.

What the heck is that supposed to mean? :c
Might there be a hint of truth there?

I can confirm the red glimmer. My G500 does have some red light coming out of the lens. It's not easy to see, but if you look at the laser and find something that seems red that's it. If you unplug it, the red glimmer disappears.

Right, so I wasn't making things up. There's no glimmer at all on my G500, plugged in or not. Reinstalling the software did nothing. It's gone to meet its maker. Or it will once I RMA it.

I've contacted Logitech but they haven't got back to me aside from an automated email so far.

For now I've picked up an M500, which I'll use as a backup once my G500 is replaced.

Sounds like the USB port your G500 was connected to went into sleep mode and had a heart attack (possibly overvoltage) when you woke it up.

Already been said but Logitech are awesome with RMAs, I contacted them about the textured grip being slightly loose on my G9 about a year after I bought it, it only moved like 1mm but it was annoying. They sent me out a replacement G9x, no questions asked and I got to keep the G9 too

Shame they didn't fix the grip coming loose issue with the G9x too though, that came loose within a couple of weeks

Comments on the M500: It's like a cheaper G500. Finish isn't as nice, cord is thin and feels fragile, tracking isn't quite as good, fixed CPI, fewer buttons. Otherwise... Body shape is almost the same and it still has the hyper scroll wheel. And the tracking is still adequate.

It's a nice mouse and I'll be fine using it for now, but the G500 beats it by a lot.

Last time I wrote, I just thought you were talking about the reflection in the glass, but now I've seen the real light coming out of the sensor. I even caught it on camera:

The camera exaggerates it a lot (and colors it purple), but the laser is definitely emitting a red light.

Their support here in Australia is abysmal. Probably better in the US.

Hope my G500 doesn't die

The red "laser" you see is the light from the DPI adjust thing.
