RE: My first PC build & first thread

Hi guys,

I'm new to overclock.net and have been looking at building a new pc for a few months now. I have been doing a lot of research and this is what I have come up with.

CPU: i7 2600K
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Deluxe
Primary HDD: Intel X25 120GB SSD
Secondary HDD: WD 1TB 64MB Cached 7200rpm
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 6950 2GB

RAM: Corsair Memory Vengeance 8 Dual Ch DDR3 1600 MHz
(PC3 12800) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8

PSU: Coolmaster 800W Silent Pro Gold
Case: Antec Lanboy Air (Blue)

Could you please advise me on whether I should change my RAM or CPU cooler, happy with everything else because of price.

I will be using this PC for multimedia editing, gaming and internet.

Cheers

8 Gigs of RAM is a bit too much of an overkill right now. But if the price is right for you then I say go for it.

Hey hoops,

I was thinking that too as i think 6Gb is more than enough.

What do you think would be a good alternative?

Amazon are all out of Corsair RAM atm, at the moment the price is $134US

Dont listen to hoops. MOAR IS BETTER!! HAHAHAHA

EDIT: Up the power on the GPU: HIgher ATI or GTX 580....may as well go all out.

You can only use Amazon? Newegg has a wider selection and a lot of things often go on sale there.

Ok...essentially you seem like your building a similar computer to the one I recently built..First and foremost, 8 gb of ram is excessive...initially you wan't to start off a bit small, and if it's absolutely necessary build from there... 8gb of ram for gaming is pointless, and isn't absolutely necessary for multimedia/editing.

I game on my sig rig, I do soft editing, lots of multimedia and an overwhelmingly large amount of multi-tasking. You can save a lot of money by switching out some parts. For starters, don't get a 2600k! You just don't need it for what your doing. If you get the 2500k ($100 cheaper) overclock it and you'll be just as happy.
Secondly, don't get the coolermaster psu...im not saying it's bad..but, I aint saying its good either..get an AX750 or a seasonic psu..And is there something in particular you like about the deluxe? because it's useless..I own it and I should have just picked up a p8p67 pro..you save 50ish dollars...the only extras you get are the usb 3.0 hub...

Besides that everything looks like it's alright..perhaps a gtx560ti would benefit you more so than an amd video card...cuda may help with the editing

I agree with everything. You probably don't need 8 gigs quite yet.

Sorry dude, I don't agree with you 100%, more RAM has not really been proven to increase the performance of your system. But in regards to the GPU, a increase could make a difference..a 6970 or GTX570 would be nice but value for $$ is my main concern, cheers though

Hoops:
I'm in Australia so not sure if newegg will send to me, I will have to check it out..thx

AsanteSoul:
First of all, thx for taking the time to go into detail about your thoughts. In regards to RAM what would you suggest? Sounds like we are interested in the same applications, are you sure about downgrading to i5 2500K, the i7 2600k seems to handle a higher load. Have not looked into the Corsair AX750, chose the Coolmaster as it is quite and had a few good reviews in a mag called AtomicPc. Nothing spec about the deluxe, just another recommendation from the magazine. In regards to GPU, thought more RAM onboard was better? Most performance the Radeon cards out perform the ATI cards

raiderxx:
thx dude

If you want to pull the trigger ASAP, this is still on sale until monday and is dirt cheap.
