8GB of ram? - Page 2

I've had 4gb that entire time, and I've also not had to worry about "running low" since, so it's a waste of money. Unless you use VMs or use 64-bit programs.

A 32-bit program can only access 2gbs of space, so if, for example, gaming is the most intensive thing you will be doing, 4gb is plenty.

kontakt is harsh on the RAM!
grab as much as you can your going to need it.
i was working in cubase earlier with a bunch of NI vst amongst other vsti's it and even with 6gb and an overclocked cpu/cpu-nb the audio was starting to break up (though i am using a mainstream soundcard now)
thats got to be the only reason i could see to go intel, you can get up to 24gb on one mainstream mobo.

Nobody should ever say you will never use 4gb of ram or more than half of 6gb of ram again....I have been playing Civilization 5 for a week now since i built my new rig and it uses 3.5gb of ram on Dx11 settings. My system is 64-bit.

Everyone needs to be 64-bit and should be or get a new pc. Windows 8 is going to be 64-bit only, Win7 was the last OS to offer 32-bit.

Can anyone second this? Why have people been bashing 4 sticks of ram for the past few years?

He's half right. 2GB modules do tend to overclock better than 4GB modules. However, having 4 RAM slots occupied (instead of 2) tends to cause other issues. They more or less cancel out. I went with 4x2 mostly because I caught a good deal on it. Otherwise I would have just gone with 2x2. The only time I have managed to come close to maxing out my RAM is when I ran Intel's burn in test at the highest stress level. Even Crysis at max settings with enhanced textures and a tweak mod doesn't use 8GB on my rig. It's nice to know I have it, but it was far from a requirement for me.

Are the 4 stick problems caused by the C2 stepping of the Phenom II only?

Well what do you know, the guys who are selling the sample libraries are running their libraries on 512mb machines under winxp. They "just" upgraded to a better computer earlier this year.

Finale 2011 recommends 1GB or more, Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 recommends 2gb, and the Vienna symphonic library recommends 2GB as well.

I guess it's very unlikely that you are going to load the entire library at once for any composition.

For 4gb of ram, how much swap space do I need? And should the swap file be put onto the second hard drive? (they are identical WD black 640GB)

How does 2x2 overclock better than 4x2? With a black processor, if I only raise the multiplier, will I need to OC the ram as well?

For gaming, is a higher OCed 4gb faster than a slower 8gb?
