my hunch is that 4x2GB will do better since there is less load to be overclocked per dimm...this might translate to faster timings or more MHz, so long as you keep the voltage within spec.

Gskill said something about they only support 1600mhz with 2 sticks. For 4 sticks they only support 1333mhz.

Do you mean overclocking the ram, or just changing the multiplier on the cpu?

Use the word rated, not supported.
C3 revision or later CPUs will adequately support 1600Mhz with 4 DIMMs, though keep in mind AMD rates the IMCs for 1333Mhz.
