Spinpoint F4's & RAID 6?

Thread Starter
How reliable would a 4-5Tb RAID6 array be, while using Samsung Spinpoint F4 (2TB) Drives?

Theyre cheap for mass storage, and am looking for around 4 or 5 useable Terabytes of media storage...

Any known issues with these drives in a RAID Array?

Why are you using a RAID6 array and not a RAID5 array with a hot spare?

Also, you'll be best off partitioning this into 2Tb partitions.

hot spare meaning unpartitioned, new drive somewhere in a closet incase of failure?

No, raid 5 with a hot spare means taking 4 drives, having 3 with your stripe with parity and a fourth there ready to take over incase a drive fails. It's in the machine at the time of creating your RAID array

RAID6 is normally used with larger raid volumes.

Cross fingers it doesn't fail during the rebuild..

He'd have the same issue with a RAID6 array as well. You'll still have to replace the drive at some point so that comment is pretty redudant (excuse the pun)

Not particularly with a single drive rebuild.
If you have an error on reading from one of the array members during rebuild and it drops out of the array you still have all of your data to source from.

... so the safest way to go with this and have lets say, 4Tb usable storage (using Spinpoint F4's as long as theyre RAID safe) would be which way?

With a good quality raid controller he'll be fine. I'd personally go with the RAID5 with a hot spare as it's the most cost effective solution.

If your data is that important, you should have a backup solution in place as well since RAID isn't completely infailable.

and you'll be looking at 5x2tb = 5.5TB usable with a hot spare.

EDIT - If you went with RAID6 it would be 5x2tb = 6TB of space but you'd need a 6th incase of drive failure.

I have a RocketRaid 2320 card still new in box which i had planned on using...
And that would be plenty of space...

Guess now I have to read up on how to configure RAID5 with a hotspare lol
