Are good games too rare to justify being an Enthusiast?

Thread Starter
I'm always thinking about upgrading something in my system, whether it's an SSD or a video card, it's constantly on my mind. Should I get the GTX 590 or the 6990 or wait for something else?? Maybe I should wait for Kepler? Maybe I should do this, or maybe I should do that. Frankly, maybe I should just quit being an enthusiast altogether. I've spent thousands (not even close to what others spend though) on my system and for what? Just to get a few extra frames per second out of a game that probably isn't even any good???? What a complete waste of money. Computers are the worst investment anyone could make. We buy the top of the line product and 7 months later it's worthless and something "better" has come out. We all know this already.

But, are enough good games coming out in order for us to at least try and rationalize our wasteful hobby? I don't think so, and I think it goes a little something like this:
  • Game comes out, odds are it isn't great, but it has good graphics, so you spend $300 on video card upgrade so you can play a good graphics yet one with crappy game-play
  • 8 months later another comes out with good gameplay and great graphics, and by now you're machine isn't good enough anymore for it, so you save money for several months and buy a $600 video card just so you can play it, but by the time you save your money and buy it, you become bored of the game
  • 1 year later, a new DX version comes out as well as one or two good games with awesome graphics, and of course, being the enthusiast that you are, you spend money on a brand spanking new system just so you can play 2 games that you'll eventually end up being bored with

IMO, there aren't enough good games out there to justify our hobby. And if there are, they probably come out on the cusp of a new video card release or right after a new DX version.

Agree or disagree? All opinions are welcome, as I'm not a huge hardcore gamer like many here are.

If you aren't a fan of the hobby, maybe you'd be happier in another one?

I think the scenario you set forth is a bit exaggerating.
You don't need to play every game at 1024x AA and 4096x AF at 7950x3200 on 6 monitor eyefinity..

Hardware from the last ~2 years should easily run any newer game

I some what agree. Now I cannot really upgrade my PC without moving out of LGA 775 really. Cannot really upgrade my graphics card without buying new power supply. Only recent game that impressed me was Bulletstorm. It pushes my PC a good amount but other than that ehh.. I probably wont upgrade for a bit.. Portal 2 will come out in no time and that game does not take much to run it.

Good game play + awesome graphics are hard to come by now a days :'(

I dont think its how fast the tech moves that you dont like, rather its the community surrounding enthusiast computing. If we werent here saying "UPGRADE NOW!" then you would think your system is epic
(Which it still is)

On topic, I think it depends on what games you enjoy. I play anything from FPS to racing and I don't have time to play all the games I enjoy playing.

You know... You really don't need to spend that much.

I used to use the same build that I have now, with every part being the same except for the old athlon x2 CPU, different mobo and windows vista. Well RAM too but I got that for free.

I've cheapskated my PC into existence. I will continue to recycle old parts from old builds into new ones and not buying stuff that is THE BEST. You know. There is no game out there that requires more than a 5670 to play it. You don't need to max out everything. My dual core can run most new games fine. Don't NEED more than that.

You wasting money on this hobby, frankly, is your problem. You can just as easily save money by building something like my build. Granted, it won't run metro 2033 smoothly or crysis maxed, but it can play all games playably on some lowered settings.

If you have doubts like that, don't go wasting money. Your 280 will last for some time, and your i7 will be good for the next 5 years..

You should upgrade when an application you use or enjoy cannot function on your machine to your standards. I never upgrade just because something new and shiny was released. I upgrade when an application I've purchased tells me that it's time to upgrade. Be a smart consumer!

With that said, a lot of members are younger and need to upgrade when funds are available. They cannot just upgrade whenever they feel they itch because they're relying on birthday money, tax refunds, etc. If you have money though, upgrade on your terms not just when something newer and faster comes along.
