I've cheapskated my PC into existence. I will continue to recycle old parts from old builds into new ones and not buying stuff that is THE BEST. You know. There is no game out there that requires more than a 5670 to play it. You don't need to max out everything. My dual core can run most new games fine. Don't NEED more than that.

You wasting money on this hobby, frankly, is your problem. You can just as easily save money by building something like my build. Granted, it won't run metro 2033 smoothly or crysis maxed, but it can play all games playably on some lowered settings.

If you have doubts like that, don't go wasting money. Your 280 will last for some time, and your i7 will be good for the next 5 years..
That's just like, your opinion man. That being said the same could be said about almost every hobby and a very large majority of people on this site would completely disagree with you. Just because YOU think it's a waste doesn't make it so.

Actually, I don't think it's a waste of money

I was referring to the OP, who implied that he thought that it was a complete waste of money. I was going on that. In my case, I consider it "spending money". My cheap skate rig is the result of poor funding. Not because I don't care about the hobby too much.

Then buy an xbox and use the xbox forums where you have no opportunity to upgrade until they tell you to.

I'm upgrading right before BF3 comes out just for that game plus late next year is just going to have a few good games anyway coming out at that time.

IMO, upgrade your video card either now or next generation, then leave the computer as-is until the new consoles come out. Like it or not (I suspect the latter) the majority of games aren't going to need anything more than.. well my computer until the consoles upgrade.

I think i7monkey needs to switch to decaf Truly I think the hardest part is finding games, in the genre you like, is $$$. I thought I was happy with my dual core until I found this site

Either way, I'm cheap as hell, and too have pieced together my 775 sig, and play all my games without any complaints. I'm happy being a gen or 2 behind it affords me my hobby, and I still get to sleep in the house I'd still be using my 4870 if my in-laws hadn't got me a gtx470.

All in all, it's about self satisfaction when it comes to any hobby, or legal addiction for some. Self control plays no part when you gots the dollas'. Just being satisfied with what you have is a condition of being human. If we were happy with our two legs, we wouldn't have the concord... or this place for that matter

Businessmen would take the opportunity to take advantage of the consumers' psyche. They probably already have the tech to release kepler and the likes right now, heck there's probably a completely different tech that would blow kepler out of the water but they figured...damn we could so take advantage of their enthusiasm and pretend our current tech is slowly improving. Juice'em wallets out. But in the end it's all good cuz the extra money goes into R&D for better hair restoration medicine.

I stopped settling for medium settings and jaggedy-looking resolutions. I used to go with middling hardware and run medium settings or 30-40 FPS. Then I'd upgrade, and end up playing the same games over again because it was such a huge difference in how great they looked at full settings on better hardware.

If I'm going to spend my precious time playing a game, I want to see it at its full glory, the FIRST time through. I can't play games at crappy settings or 30-40FPS anymore.

Since I started doing a lot of PC gaming back in 2002 there's really only been 3 games that have made me go 'dang, I need to upgrade!'.

Those were:
Far Cry (it made my 9500Pro cry, had to get a 6800)
Crysis and Stalker SoC (I got into them both around the same time, they made my 8880GTS320 cry maxed out so I got an 8800GTS512 ... still not enough for Crysis, but ...)

For a while there I was upgrading all the time, but I'm gonna stick w/what I've got for awhile. The economy is still sucky, and my fiance is trying to start a business and making negative money, so ... glad I like what I've got!
