I was thinking about downgrading since most new games are just dx9 ports with barely any graphical settings. I've been playing more games on my q6600 + 4870 rig than I have with my sig rig. But then I found out TES:V will be out later this year. By then my 5870 crossfire rig will be two years old, I hope it's good enough to run it with most the goodies turned up.

This isn't the best community to gauge what you "need". We all like shiny upgrades. I held back upgrading because there was no point, but when SB came out I had to hop on the bandwagon. My Q6600 was show its age in games I ran.

I think your having a gaming crisis. I was on the same boat a few months ago, I just quit playing. What I did was stop reading reviews, stop caring about people opinions and just play like when I was a kid. I stopes thinking about is this game epic and just sunk into the story. People like the attach the term good and great but they are not needed. I think we in this hobby sometimes forget why we need these systems. Getting an extra 2 fps is great but when all you do is play 10 minutes of a game to see if you can max it out is useless. That's what I was doing. I just sat down one day and reviewed what games i had beaten and I was surprised that I had beaten 0 games in the last two years. Just get gaming and don't worry about needing 60fps to game, 55 works just fine.

Now I actually enjoy games even games with borderline graphics. Mini ninjas comes to mind, its silly and not a graphically demanding game but I play the crap out of it.

I gotta agree with this post, I constantly find myself loading up games, seeing how well it plays and then that was it.

I do plan on upgrading my system, but this one has lasted me fine, sure, the CPU is a bottleneck [And old, and core locked xD] but it can run any game I throw at it on high, and my GPU didn't even cost me $150.

It's like me with Airsoft, I've shelled out thousands into airsoft, upgrading parts, new barrels, new hop ups, only to grab my friends $180 gun and .. enjoy it more than my own, we get into our hobbies and go for the best we can, we want to stand out and stand back and say "Hey, my system is top of the line, max out Crysis on 3 monitors" etc.

I recently just reinstalled Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Oblivion. Graphically demanding? Nope, in fact even with all my mods it stays at 50 - 60 + FPS, but I played it just to play, going through Oblivion with the forest mods is amazing still, I got lost just watching the tree's blow in the wind, it impressed me more than Crysis at 60 FPS and maxed ever will.

Sometimes we just lose our way and get caught up in technology, we see other people running high end games at max, and we try, if we cant, we want to upgrade, and the cycle goes through our heads just as it did yours.

I suggest taking a break and play some good old games, Oblivion, any of the Fallouts, Morrowind [I'm a RPG man ^^] just for the sake of playing, it rekindled my love, hopefully it will yours.

I still play all the games I want to with my sig rig, and I got it almost 5 years ago. Until I can't play games with it anymore, I'm keeping it. That pretty much means when above the 8800 series is listed on the minimum requirements, I'll be getting a new GPU. I might get new parts for Guild Wars 2 and Arkham City anyway though.

That is insane. Nice life outa that rig. I just did an upgrade from a similar system and things are so much smoother,I hope guild wars 2 is beautiful like the first one was. I guess when you go top of the line you can squeeze out some extra life.

I don't really have to play all the latest and best games. Some I just buy knowing they will probably suck but they will look amazing, like Crysis. The campaign in Crysis sucked and I never touched the multiplayer because it was probably even worse... but wow that game just looked amazing.

If I enjoy a game I will probably play it forever. For instance WoW is old but they are constantly updating it so that is one game that I will probably have to continue to upgrade to keep up with. But I also play games like Counter-Strike 1.6 which has horrible graphics but I play it more for a challenge than anything else.

Sure I can buy a game console for the same price if not cheaper than just a video card costs for your PC, but at least I can do whatever I want on my PC and Sony can't sue me for it.

I've had this machine for two years, so I was already buying tech that was a generation behind, but I am very satisfied. However, I think I'm going to upgrade my GPU some time this year seeing the new games coming out this year especially with Batman considering that i'm not getting the settings i like anymore. I think I might have to upgrade to a 460 or something of similar performance from the AMD side. Whatever is cheaper.

I may have agreed with the OP last year, or maybe even the year before, but this year looks like it's going to be excellent for PC gaming. All new hardware is coming out this year too, or has come out earlier on, it's a good time to upgrade if you feel like you need to.

Basically it's a question of personal opinion though. How much do you game versus how badly you want those games to look top notch? Also, how picky are you? Not every year can have a bunch of really awesome games, and games are so expensive (assuming you actually buy them) that it's hard to justify spending a lot of money out on a limb. I think, if you upgrade every 3-4 years you can still hold on to being in the enthusiast circle and get a lot out of your games.
