Are good games too rare to justify being an Enthusiast? - Page 6

There is only one game out right now that i cant max @ 1080p and thats Metro 2033. Other then that maybe Crysis 2. For 1-2 games a year and considering how good they will end up being no need to upgrade so much now until we get new consoles.

Pretty much the reason why I suggested this year to be the one to upgrade on. These games alone both look beautiful and I'm optimistic that they will be great games to play as well.

Buying used is a good option as well, especially if the warranty is intact!

Is it worth buying two GTX 580s to run Metro 2033 maxed out? No.

Is it worth building a rig with a single GTX 560 to play every other game maxed and Metro 2033 on high settings? Yes.

Now is the best time to be a PC Gamer if you ask me, especially if you're into first person shooters. Basically every FPS coming out this year is also for PC. Was like this last year as well. We were in a bit of a slump back in 2009, and that was more a lack of good games on all platforms if you ask me, but things have improved dramatically. (And that's not to say we didn't have any good games in 2009, Left 4 Dead 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.)

Pretty much every game on PC looks dramatically better than it's console counterparts. We almost always get dedicated servers for multiplayer. And, although not as often anymore, we get mod tools.

And some of the best games released last year are PC exclusives. Like Starcraft II and my personal favorite of 2010, Civilization V, which has an awesome SDK.

TBH You don't even need as much of a rig as you have to enjoy games. Games aren't supposed to be about how high your settings are anyways. They're supposed to be about having fun, first and foremost, and secondly to tell a story in a compelling, interactive, crowbar-filled way.

I took you for more of a post-apocalyptic wasteland type of guy.

Me and TestECull have near identical rigs, and look at us. We're still using them to play games we enjoy. I understand wanting to be an enthusiast, but I cringe every time I see a thread asking if someone's rig will be able to max all new games. Play games for the game people.

New Vegas won't run for more than five minutes, so instead I've been in Minecraft building doom fortresses.

And then blowing them the hell up.

And then rebuilding them.

Trust me if I could bop New Vegas into cooperating with me I would be cleaning out the Sierra Madre's vaults right about now. I'll probably un-bored myself of it when I grow tired of Minecraft, which presumably won't take long since all I can really do is build doom fortresses.

And blow them up.

S939 Represent!

Seriously though. My rig has never choked on a game so badly I couldn't play it. Sure I had to turn a bunch of settings down but so what? Games aren't supposed to be about pretty visuals. If that's all you want James Cameron has just the solution to your problem. Or is it Michael Bay? I can't tell which one has better CGI.

If you're forking out for hardware only to be continually disappointed maybe it's the wrong hobby. Although I went through a similar phase not too long ago. I was in a bit of a rut (playing only FPS) I took a bit of a break and started playing games without worrying about besting friends, purely for my own enjoyment and rediscovered my love of gaming.

Alternatively, you could try model train building or cross stitching.

TBH just play some good RTS's and RPG's and a little bit of FPS. Much more entertaining

A £100 midrange GPU is enough to keep me lasting for every 2 years. I'm nearing the 4 year overhaul mark though. Looking at getting Sandy Bridge when it's back on the market.

I think you're looking at it wrong though OP. For a £100 upgrade every 6 months, your PC can bring you a world of great things.
