The reason they give total power consumption is... they would have to get the voltage and current values to be able to give wattage value... V*I=W
Measuring voltage is easy enough, but getting the current is more problematic, since high end cards draw power from the PCI-E connectors and the slot in the motherboard...In measuring current you have to connect it in series from the powersource to the card itself which means(in most cases) two series connections for each PCI-E connector and one through PCI-E slot itself...This would require some jury rigging or custom made connectors to do this...
It is much easier to due this through the power cable leading from wall to the PSU.... Hence the reason you are given system wattage, at idle and load, rather then just the card... Just take the delta between the idle and load values and you can get a idea of GPU wattage rates..Edited by soth7676 - 2/26/11 at 7:06am
