ubuntu wifi--->eth? - Page 2

post #11 of 14
The eth1 out from the Ubuntu bridge should go into the WAN. But honestly, you have a wireless router, why don't you just move the DSL closer to the router (I'm sure there is a phone line) and then do computer + laptop as wifi? Or better yet, get DD-WRT on that router and use it as an AP/bridge. =P

[edit] I should explain why you want it in WAN. Because if you don't the router is going to expect it(ethX) to be picking up an address so the router will send a DHCP signal. The WAN is expected to be receiving DHCP. Your making a conflict doing what you are doing now.

Like mushroom said,

Your diagram should have the Ubuntu eth1 (out) to WAN (in) on the router. Since information is going IN, and being distributed to Lan 1-4.

It does work the other way, but it's a freaking mess as you have to disable DHCP on the router (making it a switch/hub). Really, that should fix most of your problem. But as I said before, I'm sure you can do a better layout if you tried. I don't know the house though, so I can't exactly say what the layout should be.

Major term bolded

Anyways, I can feel for this guy. At my old place, I had to have the cable modem on the other side of the house b/c of really bad signals going into my computer room for the cable modem. It was split twice in the attic with a inline coaxial amp added for stability on both the modem and Digital cable box. My room was off the 2nd split. The house was new when we moved in, the damn cable guys ran it like crap. I also couldn't run over 100ft of cat5 cable, so I just did what I could, got an extension antenna for both ends and hoped for the best.

Had some of the worst pings in raids. TF2 was always 130+. Now its in my room with the computer and things are gravy train on biscuit wheels
