Is it ok to switch to AHCI with an already installed OS?

Yes you need to edit your registry first then change the bios to ahci

set AHCI mode first in windows regedit
hkey_local_machine\\system\\currentcontrolset\\ser vic es\\msahci

change start to 0 default is 3 to enable AHCI

restart comp and set AHCI in bios
save bios

Thanks, worked out. Dad forgot to set that in the BIOS and didn't have his RAM in the right slots for dual channel. He's slackin' lol.
