new build

Thread Starter
You may have already seen me post about graphics card earlier, but I am planning a rig for my soon to be 12 year old brothers birthday...

Its going to be strickly for gaming. Don't care about benchmark results, no video encoding, none of that. No CAD, nothing. Gaming. Thats it.

So I have built somthing up on newegg, and I think it fits all of my specifications..

TO BE CLEAR

My definition of MAXING gaming is ALL SETTINGS MAXED while getting atleast 35 FPS. Don't criticize, this maybe not be what you agree with, but for this build, thats the standard.

-Needs to be able to max games at 1440x900 (maybe upgrade to 1920x1080 at some point.. but thats what his monitor can do right now)

-Needs to kill games like BFBC2, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Rift, ANY racing game, and any future FPS game like BF3. Oh and Crysis.

-Needs to be somewhat future proof. When I say this, I mean, I don't need to max the settings, but AT LEAST above medium settings at a reasonable FPS

So here is the setup I have planned.

Oh, and before I forget, I realize that GPU will be an issue along the roads, and that will have to be upgraded at SOME point, but for now I am thinking it would be the best route to keep budget down.

Also, I need the board to have onboard graphics. In the event I cannot say enough money, I would like the computer to still be usable, as in I would cut out the GPU until I can afford one.

Total is 499.94$ I hit my budget PERFECT imo...

Also, I did not leave HDD, Optical, and OS out.. I have a surplus of all that stuff at my house..

But yeah, anyway I can make this rig better, or cheaper, please! Let me know!!

Edit: What about this GPU, its deffinitly better than the one I picked for a low price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130591

worth the upgrade?

Everything looks good but I would get a USB3 Motherboard to "future proof" it.
like this Board. I have used it on 3 builds and It is great. It might even unlock that dual to a quad core.

Looks good for the budget, as to whether it can max out those games.. I don't know (not because I don't think it will but because I honestly don't know ^^)

As for for suggestions for better/cheaper parts
I hear the antec three hundred is pretty much the case to get in this price range
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-066-_-Product
$5 more than the one you picked out though
Also these are pretty much the go to RAM in this price range
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-277-_-Product
$5 more again, yeah, but better

Hope this helps and good luck with your build
P.s If I were you I would search OCN for some second hand bargains, with BD and the re-release of SB right around the corner there should be some pretty good CPU,Motherboard sales

Thats the same board I own.

How about this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130290

Will this handle a quad core? I don't know why you guys are so up on core unlocking, I have unlocked 4 of these CPUs. With no fails.

As for case, I found this.. I like it better, nice window, fans, and its all steel. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811121096

Did I mention 39.99??

$500!? Yikes I could've gotten you a much better build for that, i.e. no generic memory, maybe a GTX 560 Ti, and a power supply that's exact same (both in power rating and interiors even, it's a rebranded S12) for half the price [Antec Neo ECO 520W, it's been at $40 for awhile]. Not very good choices for the price IMO here.

Oh, I thought you already bought it

Anyways...
Phenom II x2 555 - $90
ASUS M4A87TD EVO + ASUS 6870 - $310, $290 AR [if you prefer GTX 460 there's a similar combo with 460 1GB for $305, $275 AR)
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 2x2 - $45 after promo, $20 AR
Rosewill Destroyer - $40 shipped after promo
Antec NEO ECO 520W - $40 shipped
Total cost before rebates: $495
After rebates: $450

You get a video card a tier up, better board (esp. for unlocking), better RAM, better case...
