Free hosts have extremely limited features and resources.. and the servers are most often extremely overloaded. Any particular reason you want a "free" host? Many hosts offer very cheap shared plans for just a dollar or two a month.

Buy a domain name for ~$15 a year and host on one of your own machines

What exactly are you wanting to host?

Also if you get in a virtual hosting environment on a Linux server, suddenly things get a lot easier. Especially if you ask nicely and are granted ssh access to your account.

One of my favorite things to do is move big files from my hosts in Canada to my other one in Chicago... By typing on the command line of the Chicago box from my desk in California. Or using sshfs to mount the webhost directory as though I just plugged in a thumb drive so I can edit files.

That's stuff you can't get for free.

That's extremely unreliable.. ISP's change your home IP on a daily basis to stop people from doing that. Unless you buy a business account for a static IP... which would end up costing more than just renting a VPS.

I have used two ISPs over the last 3 years (one for 2 years, the other for 1 year) and have actually never had my IP address change.

I host my website from a computer sitting in my basement. Works great if you don't host anything requiring large amounts of upstream bandwidth.

I am new to web design and I wanted a free host to build a site for my husband, but after doiong some more research that is not the way I want to go.

We have a static ip so I have tossed the idea of hosting myself. What would you suggest for using as a web server?

That depends on what you will be hosting. If its static content (just html files), just about ANY computer will do. If it is dynamic content, the more complex it is the more power you will need. My server is my old Athlon II x3 with 4GB RAM on my old mobo with a 250GB hard I found lying around in an old old old case I got from a customer. It hosts my website that gets a few thousand hits a day, my email, and an MS SQL server. What I have is still probably overkill.

It's a simple html, no database yet. It is a very simple site and I doubt it will get but a handful of hits for a while. So I know I have the system to do it. I just don't know if I should use IIS or apache. I don't know of anyothers, although I am sure there are some. I played with xitami in class once. It seems very light wieght and easy to use, would it be a good choice?
