XFX 6870 Dual Fan Performance vs Reference

Thread Starter
I'm interested in the performance of the cooler on this card vs the reference design.

Especially because it seems to be one of the cheapest 6870 cards i can find, being a few pounds cheaper then other brands with reference coolers.

I've googled it but i can't find many reviews. The only review i've been able to find that even mentioned temps was here:
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...-noise-oc.html

Has anyone any experience with this card or the same cooler on a different card?

I know about XFX's reputation with not having good customer support outside the US and i'm not interested in that, i would just like some info on the cooler.

I'm debating whether or not to get this or the ASUS 6870 with reference cooler or get the MSI 6870 with the Twin Frozr III cooler.

(6850 in the pic, but it looks the same as the 6870 version)

I have 2 6870 twin frzr IIs and love them. They are water cooled now, but before watercooling they never got above ~60ish gaming and hardly ever got louder than my storm sniper's case fans.

that is a 6850, which would explain why it is cheaper than the 6870s

I say go with the XFX then.

The reference cooler is like a jet engine, so loud, i replaced it with a TwinTurboPro.

If you can wait until the 10th or 11th mine will be here. I can posts temps and some PCB/cooler pics. I was looking into this card but couldn't find anything beyond the link you posted and a Motherboards.org video/review. It still has the best cooler for the price IMO.

Well, I was going to post pics but I had no idea XFX had started the whole "void warranty" stickers on the cooler screw heads when I posted that. US and Canada are supposed to be excluded from that but I'm not going to chance it. Since you're from Ireland this this might be an issue for you. If I'm honest, I would have purchased the other card I was looking at over the XFX products. I have no problem with the stickers... their warranty their terms. I have a problem with XFX not clearly spelling out the terms of the warranty stickers on the box or their site. In fact they don't say squat about it in the warranty info that came in the box either. I had to go forum searching to find out about the US/CA exclusion and I just don't think that's right.

Anyway, I tested it with Furmark 1.90 and it was running 67C max under load @ 30% default fan speed. Kick the fan up to 100% manually and it fell to 61C load. This was burn in mode @ 1920x1200. At 100% the fan was noisy but not annoyingly so. It was a little louder than my 120mm Xigmatek case fans. Ambient temp was 66C.

The three heat pipes are direct touch. The vrm are under a heatsink that is held to the pcb using screws. The GDDR5 aren't covered but they are getting air from the fans. It really is a nice card.
