They are going to GUT & STRIP Windows 8 down to a minimal OS, of this I'm rather certain... (This would be great for lower power/performance Netbooks & HTPCs)
They made things very clear when they made the statement that "They are moving ALL of their assets online"... Looks like their cloud will be busy integrating software which will allows users to access former applications you would have installed on your computer to be used through a browser as an online service only...
I don't know about you guys but I think Windows 8 is going to change how we compute dramatically...
If they strip the OS down to the bare essentials & lock it 100% to increase security & prevent malicious activities & software from killing the OS, they will do well by the consumers, even if they don't like it, but more importantly they will secure their assets & payment for those assets by providing them as services....
One cannot walk inside the front door of Microsoft and expect to hack them to get to use their software services which will only be accessible online, they will put an end to piracy & hacking all in one swift move if they do this to the OS..
Sure, some may call me crazy to think that this is where they are going with this OS, but I don't think I'm too far off base either... Cloud Services & Live will be a very integrate part of Windows 8..

Microsoft’s plans for deep cloud integration in Windows 8. The base of Windows Explorer in Windows 8 will feature deep integration with the company’s SkyDrive storage and the ability to easily and quickly share media to your social networks will be integrated into the Windows Shell. Microsoft’s Windows App Store will feature applications hosted on the company’s Windows Azure service and will reduce the need for local data. Microsoft is trying to realise its vision of “three screens and a cloud”. Settings and application data will be automatically synced into the cloud to allow users to sync their application sets and settings across any Windows 8 based PC, laptop, slate or phone.
