Need A New Time Sink - Multi Player or MMO

I've been getting fairly antsy about trying out a few new games that are either multiplayer or MMO.

I'm mainly concerned about actual gameplay originality - I'm not interested in WoW or it's many clones (anymore). Storyline would be a nice plus, but to be honest if the game play is good enough, story is a non-factor to me at this point for this type of game.

A bit of background:

I played WoW for about 2 years raiding high-end. I love the theorycrafting that went along with it, and the raids were actually fun when you're trying to figure out how to down a tough boss. However, I got burnt out and don't want to get back into WoW or another clone of it simply because if I went back I would either want to raid high-end again, or not play at all.

RIFT interested me, however I've heard it's WoW without class restrictions and a tiny bit more of an involved persistent world. To be honest, not too interested.

Played AION and Guild Wars, but it became a bit too grindy to me. Fairly decent combat system, but again - grindy.

EVE Online is one game I keep going back to and leaving. I love the concept, the world, and the player run economy. However, the combat system is a serious turn off for me. I equate it to simply doing a number of theorycrafts/simulators and then hitting a button to see whose math (you vs. another player) was better. Not the most riveting combat ever. I wish there was a more active user-role in combat then simply hitting a couple of buttons at the start, then sitting back and letting the computer take care of everything else.

So essentially, I'd be looking for something akin to EVE but with the combat activeness of a standard MMO. Or hell, was there recently a change to EVE that would make it worth going back to?

So...based on that, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should pick up?
Please, no "try this game called Real Life" trolls. It's not funny, and definitely not original.

Wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic. It should be pretty awesome!

I would wait or kill some time with WoW for a few months. As mentioned above, SW:TOR is coming out this year, and it could end up being very good.

If the reviews for SW:TOR don't suite your tastes after it comes out, I would go for Rift. I've heard many good things about it.

Guild Wars was designed to not be grindy at all. I didn't find it to be either. Aion, yes, but not GW. You might want to give that another try. The storyline is quality, even if some of the voice acting is otherwise. I think you should give it another try. If you want even less grind, try Factions, the first expansion. You level even quicker than the original game, as the focus is on the missions and story, not grinding for gear.

Try this game called real life. Heh, I'm kidding.

But in all seriousness, as far as MMOs go there aren't really any good MMOs besides the obvious ones. An MMO is either good or really really bad.

Recently myself & two other friends have become heavily addicted to League of Legends. Really fun RTS, and I normally hate RTS games. On the plus side, it's free, which is really cool.

Wouldn't classify it as an RTS, but it is a great game worth checking out. It's free with microtransactions, but NEVER are you required to pay to get ANYTHING other than cosmetic changes for your character. With that said, it's about to become my most played game without over 400 hours of gameplay, and I've played close to 500 matches.

I just started playing around three days ago, really addicted since I've learned so much about the game already. Already bit the bullet and bought $10 worth of points to buy Akali, because she's definitely the most fun character I've played so far, and I didn't feel like waiting for the regular points to buildup.

Well, you mentioned you want a more active role in combat/pvp. Age of Conan is something that is definitely unique in that field. They have done combat right. It is one of the only games where I wish all first or third person adventure games have in terms of character control and combat mechanics. It's also a very pretty game. If you want to try it, it has a free unlimited trial in the first 1-20s level area and free game download. You can also choose to download specific level brackets of the game to try so it doesn't take you two days to start a trial.

I posted a few videos of the new engine update a week ago. Though it failed at three points in time since release, I'm still waiting with trepidation that it may turn out to be a fantastic mmo in the future. Currently the PvE aspect of the game is 9/10. If you do like it after the trial, roll a PvE server (has pvp enable areas and arenas).
