yes, when i was an engineering student, I had multiple windows open at once doing a lot of things. having more ram opens up that capability for you. and you cant go wrong with an acer this day and age.

this one is also a good option, a bit weaker in terms of processing power (only a single core) but the speakers make up for it if you liek to listen to music

I was an EE engineering student. my good ol' n270(1.66 singlecore atom HT) did anything and everything i could want to on the little screen. MSDN 7 pro(FREE) (sign up if you havent and your college offers it)+ 2gb ram FTW.

orcad, pcb layout, visual studio, office, 4mb excel files(lagged a little, that's like 1million data points), spent an extra $50 for the 10(>>3) hour battery, averaged 7-8 for the first 6 months.

mine has a 5400 rpm hardrive that kills it... but hey atleast I get a lot of hours.

yeah if i was netbook shopping today, in priority order BATTERY, dual core, 2gb ram(probably upgrade yourself check warrantee issues on it), SSD(or faster drive, if it doesnt kil battery), graphics.

oh 3+usb ports, and VGA(I assume you classrooms and labs still use this).
