I just bought a reference 5870 and 5850 for crossfire for about the same price as a 6950. (I'm selling my current 5850 to my sister ) Check out the for sale threads here, so many great deals and I feel with crossfired 5850's or 5870's you will be good for quite a while

You do know that when running a 5870 with a 5850 that the 5870 will drop it's shader count and clock speed down to match the 5850 don't you?

In crossfire the more powerful cards always drop down the weakest cards spec.

Sell your sister the 5870 and run the 2x 5850's.

Yes, but I bought the 5870 (which is brand new BTW) at a killer price.. and I plan on overclocking the 5850 anyway Are you sure about the shader count dropping in crossfire? I've never heard of that happening tbh

At the same clocks a 5870 is only 4-6% faster anyway so just run the 5850's as they run less power and heat

And overclock your CPU

I don't understand how 'all 5850s have voltage control'... because mine definatly does not.... MSI afterburner wont unlock it, and for sapphire trixx, I was unable to use the software until i registered a sapphire card, please let me know how I can get around this if I can, but I have posted about my 5850 and was told by several people that my non reference card would not allow voltage control. Please let me know if this is incorrect, I hope I didn't sound rude, just getting misinformation somewhere here...

From what I have read some will allow voltage control with Trixx and some won't. You just have to be lucky with a non ref card to have voltage control. I've always wondered about the cooling on the vddc's though on non ref cards are those little heatsinks enough to take a bump in voltage and still keep the chips cool?

I haven't been able to get trixx to start up with the 5850s in crossfire.

I would really like it if someone could confirm the xfx non ref. has volt control because if it does then I would definatly be adding another 5850 + adding them both to my loop and redoing it...
I don't think they do. I suggest looking in the for sale section. I picked one up for 150 shipped, and the lifetime warranty transfered over to my XFX account.
