It tells me, that despite current trends within the dev/pub community, there is a market for thought provoking, immersive and engaging RPGs.
As with all things, I think it's cyclical... The kids/adolescents/casual gamers Bioware is desperately trying to court will eventually grow up/mature/evolve and perhaps their interests will shift too?
I must say I am relieved that im not alone either.
Im not that interested in Skyrim for the same reasons im not interested in DA2. They market themselves as "RPG" when, at best they are Fantasy with RPG Elements.
The same thing is happening with both of them. They are removing elements to make it more accessible. Thats not a bad thing on its own, but they are removing elements and facets of game play that make the game an RPG. Bethesda has admitted to "streamlining" play to make the game msmoother and easier to play. Ive never heard that phrase uttered by a developer that didnt then release a dumbed down version of thier game.
Skyrim is looking like its going to be a hack and slash with RPG elements that is marketed as an RPG which is exactly what DA2 is. The jump from Morrowind to Oblivion hurt my confidence and the screenshots ive seen of the interface in Skyrim and what ive read about the skills, a complete lack of classes, and gameplay "Revisions" make me die inside even more.
The only reason I love the Mass Effect series so much is because its a story that is driven by characters. And the characters are amazingly done. Ive never been able to say the same about Dragon Age. Ive always found the characters somewhat formulaic and not very deep. In Dragon Age Alistair was the only one who really had anything interesting going on in his personal life/backstory. And Im not referring to being the Kings offspring. Everyone else was kind of...bleh...
Im 20 and a CRAVE good narrative and good craftsman ship in my games. Im the only one of my friends who wants story and quality over killing and eyecandy. Its not fun to be ridiculed (playfully) by friends for not liking "Everyones" favorite games.
