HD's for storage...?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I want to get 2 HD for storage, one of them I want to use for backup of the other one in case on fails, I had some really bad experience in the pass where I have lost tons of data.

So I was thinking maybe an internal one and other external? Which would also be good to carry them around. Or should I get a bare drive and one of those docks. I dont know, what would you guys recommend?

Also which drive for storage? I was thinking something with 2TB

Thanks in advance.

Most 2TB drives are slow;
Its better to get faster 1TB drives.

Fastest 1TB drive out there would be the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard drive.

Which ever one you would move or transport less seems more safe (so I'm guessing internal then), but then again it is possible some how your computer catches on fire taking both the hard drive and back up hard drive with it. I would recommend external then, but just leave it in one place, if you is it to transport data you increase the chance of recking it then. I would recommend this for the internal hard drive for storage.

Edit: I got ninja'd on the hard drive there.

if you do a lot of video/audio editing lots of photoshop and it's your jobs I would consider a Server also

Asus makes some cheap servers with everything installed on them it's practically ''plug and run''

but just one question, as it is for storage do I really need anything fast?
like 7200, or 5400 should do the job? it will be used most for movies, music, and photos.

Raid 1 would place files on both drives is that right?
This might be a good ideia if I can figure it out how to do that, does it impact on system performance?

LOL... Lets hope not, the good this about the external would be moving files around, I'm waiting for a WD TV Live Plus and I think I can plug it to run movies from it. And by having a backup lets hope both wont die at the sametime and give me time to get a replacement. ;p

You'll have to move all those files at some point in time, why not do it fast?

i advise
samsung spinpoint f4 2tb - must do firmware update
Western digital Re4 2tb

They are different in price but depending if your doing raid or not.
Do you need 2tb or 1tb
I have dual 2tb f4's they are great and i advise an internal hd for the transfer then put it in a case. Backing up tb's or data via usb would be a very long process.

if you want the samsung's which can be had for 80 bucks on newegg or even 70 at microcenter i will send you links on how to update the firmware

RAID1 with enterprise drives + An external drive to backup the RAID Array to is really the only way to ensure you dont loose data.

2 of These and any given 1TB external Drive for instance.

Enterprise drives will be expensive, but they will also last way longer and have a much lower chance of failing. Couple that with an external drive to back up the data to and you are pretty much loss proof.
