Question about Home Server v1 Drive Pool

Thread Starter
I will be shortly setting up a home server v1 and was wondering if its possible to install the os onto an SSD and then drive pool sata drives for storage. My understanding is that you can not as all drives have to be the same..Thanks in advance

Yes it is possible.

WHS will only use the free space on the OS drive as a last resort. Technically the space is in the pool.

for example
If you have two mechanical sata drives for data and one SSD for OS. It will not use the empty space on the SSD drive until one of two things happen. The mechanical sata drives are both full at which point it will us the SSD space. The second scenario, one of the two mechanical sata drives are full and then you place a file on the second mechanical sata drive and then request duplication at which point WHS will place the duplicate on to the SSD.

Point is this, as long as you keep two mechanical drives with a bit of free space at all times it will never use the remaining space of the SSD that has been allocated to the storage pool.

By default WHS will do everything that it can not to place data on the OS Drive; however , if you force it into a situation where it has to put data on the OS drive it will not try to take the data back of off the OS drive when the storage pool is increased later.

Oh yeah I should add this.

every PIECE of data that you place on your WHS will go through your OS drive first, and thats a lot of wear and tear on an SSD. I don't really recommend it. I would just use a normal drive. Also, you can use a 100GB OS drive and then you can use 2 TB data drives. You can mix and match IDE, Sata , and sizes. I think that there might be a minimum size requirement for drives but I know for a fact that if there is it's under 80GB.

You also need to update it to powerpack 2 or 3 or it will store data on the OS drive first because originally it would put data on the os drive.
