Thoughts, opinions and recommendations on build

Thread Starter
Current computer is a Q6600, three year old, machine. It's begun to act a bit weird, and with Crysis 2 coming and, and Rage "around the corner" and what not, why not upgrade?!

I maily use the computer to play games (and I do like hot graphics), to program, and occasionally use a 3D modelling tool.

Avoiding potential loss of data is something that is becomming more and more important to me, and with hard drives being as cheap as they are, I was thinking of going RAID. It's completely new to me though.

I don't really overclock, but if more speed can be achieved easily (buy bigger fan, gogogo. Easily being the key word) I'm all for it.

Below is a very non-complete list of the items I thought I'd get. I'd appreciate opinions and recommendations on the items missing from the build (as well as the items listed).

Cooler Master HAF 932
Asus Rampage III Extreme
Core i7 960
Seasonic X-850 Gold (would this PSU be able to support newest graphic cards in SLI mode?)
1 x solid state drive for Windows (60GB? Will have Windows only basically)
2 x recommended hard drives for RAID (500GB is enough for sure)
Memory... was thinking about 12GB? Love to have lots of programs running simultaneously (using 30" + 24" monitor).
Graphics: currently have a 2 month old Asus GTX470. Since I'm a broke the plan was to add another one and SLI it up.

I guess that's pretty much it. Do I need to/should I add more cooling to something? Should I bother about that thing I read somewhere, where you take the CPU and remove the factor "stuff" to make sure it gets better cooling, or will I be just fine without it since I'm not going for any serious OC?

Don't lap you CPU it can dangerously screw up your CPU if you make a mistake .
I wouldn'T put the stock heatsink on a CPU maybe take an average tower or another cooler ( any good air cooler would be a must for OCing) if you don't wish to go at 4Ghz etc just take the tower you like the most .

Looks good, I'd just go with a good aftermarket cooler...

I would wait a bit probably and pick up a 2500 or 2600...they are supposed to be shipping the new chipsets here shortly...definitely more bang for your buck then the 960.

60gig is plenty for an OS disk...heck you can probably get away with 30 if you really want to.

12gigs seems like a lot unless you do some heavy duty photo and video editing you are unlikely to ever use that much, but depending on what you get it won't necessarily cost you that much more then 6 gigs.

a good 850 watt psu should be plenty for your build

You do realize that if you raid for backup with two drives you are only getting the space of one, correct?

Yeah, raid for backup. Although have this vague memory about about there being a RAID mode that combined backup with, um, "splitting files for faster access"? Time to Google.

Any recommendations on drives and memory? Seems like I'll go for 6GB then.

Waiting for new chipset might be an option, depending on how long that wait will be.

I would wait a few weeks and get the 2500k and a p67 mobo (Asus or Gigabyte are generally the accepted norm)

Get either 4 or 8gigs of ram to go with it (you would probably only need 4gigs though)

Get a good cooler like the hyper 212... Or go watercooled if you really wanna push the envelop!

Price versus performance wise it would definitely be worth waiting...
Should be sometime in March.

yeah there are different raid modes

raid 0 splits without backup, raid 1 backs up to both disks and then raid 5 and 10 do a bit of both but you need more then two drives

Grab a couple samsung spinpoint 7200's for the raid, i'll leave the ssd recommendations to someone else

looks like the new chipsets will be available within a couple weeks, and as alluded to by SirBash the p67 mobo's only support dual channel memory so you will probably want to go 8 gigs

If you wait for the 2500k to come out then the new Vertex 3 SSDs should be out.. Twice as fast supposedly.. Yes I'm jelly...
