What is the weakest point in my system and what should I upgrade? The most noticeable upgrade? I was thinking an ssd drive or maybe a couple 6870's. I have around $400 dollars to play with. system is the one in my sig rig.

any recommendations on which ssd? I'm not really up on ssd's...
you can get a decent SSD for just your OS (64Gb) for less than $200 so you could save the rest for a vid card upgrade later. How much space would you want for your SSD?

Yeah, as much as I haven't really jumped on the SSD bandwagon yet ti seems like that would get you the most noticeable performance increase.

After that I'd say move into the present with your video cards, but I did love my 4890 and I figure if you don't mind buying used then two of those are probably the best bang for the buck gpu solution available right now

64 Gb would be fine and then I could use my hard drives now for storage, is there a noticeable speed difference between an ssd and 2 1 TB spinpoints in raid 0?
SSD is much faster than HDD's in RAID. Copy speeds of up-to and over 315Mb/s compaired to HDD about 50mb/s in RAID(I think)
you could get yourself a 120Gb OCZ Vertex 2 SSD for $209.99 (USD)

I got that wrong. A spinpoint averages 95.7MB/s so AT BEST in RAID it would be double that. 191.4Mb/s (keep in mind that this is AT BEST so real world results should be lower)

So the SSD is over 100Mb/s faster on READ speeds and the 'find' speed is slower on a HDD than that of an SSD
